Re: Captive squirrels?

Well, the little one is in a release cage now. He's been consorting with wild squirrels. He comes to me when I call, or if I have food, but he is not allowing himself to be touched too much anymore. I am hoping he will do ok in the wild.

Re: Captive squirrels?

I won't let him loose until he has been in a release cage for quite some time. Unfortunately our neighbors HATE us, and animals as well, and if I told them it is likely they would seek him out just to kill him. (I saw the wife kicking a mother duck and babies while laughing about it and they shoot b...

He will be moved into an outdoor release cage next week, and hopefully after a month or two outside, he will wild up. The reason for this is, e...

Re: Captive squirrels?

I've never worked with greys, we don't have them here. My experience has been with Fox squirrels only. The only rehabber here is insane and he would be put down most likely. I truly dislike her. Any time I've taken a baby to her, usually after having it overnight (they always come to me in the middl...

Re: Captive squirrels?

Our neighbor almost shot one of my previously released babies on his second day out. He walked about 5 feet from him, simply being curious (and young and learning), but the neighbor though he was rabid. -glaring- That baby could not be touched and was like the devil himself. I can only imagine what ...

Captive squirrels?

Many of you know that I rescued a fox squirrel fairly recently. He had terrible mange and very nearly died. Anyway, he was hand raised carefully and is eating solids now. His fur is starting to come in and he is a wonderful guy. However..we have a problem. Unlike other squirrels I have raised, this ...

Re: The silver fox- Natural or not?

I have a silver fox pelt that was from a wild fox. (canada, big fluffy guy, almost pitch black. He's lovely.)

So yes, they occur in the wild.

Re: So, your going on a trip? What do you do?

I have 28 critters at the moment and I rarely go away even for a short time. I am expected to visit family for a week each summer, and I do that, and my dad watches my animals, but unfortunately even with everything spelled out he tends to mess up. Last year my frog died because he didn't give her a...

Re: My animals :D [PIC HEAVY]

I hate to post this here but my animal family has gone down by one. My little one, Jane, passed on last night. I'm going to miss her very much.

Re: Squirrel! :P

He hasn't got one. :P I would like to think of one though.

Also, the little bugger peed on the floor today and ran circles around his cage when he wanted back inside. :D

Re: Squirrel! :P

He's been to the vet, and they treated him for mange and gave me ointment for the superficial infection in the sores. The vet was shocked at the condition of his skin, but said that he looked good since he was bright and active. He is doing very well, the ointment keeps his skin soft and the sores a...

Re: Squirrel! :P

If he is releasable, and wants to go, I will turn him loose. If for some reason he can't or is unwilling to be released I will keep him and care for him.

Re: Squirrel! :P

We're back from the vet, he's been treated for the parasites. I have an ointment for his skin, which will help kill the infection and soften the crustiness so he's less miserable. They were pretty impressed when I told them how bad he was last night. He really did almost die, I thought he would. I'd...
