Re: Coydogs

This is Acacia at almost 5 years of age. She's become a lot mellower but still very skittish. People that meet her still think that she's wolf or coyote. Does this photo hint at her being a coyote mix?

Re: Coydogs

RabbleFox, I don't know why everyone here is so happy about your idea but I'm honestly not. First off, a coyote mix isn't going to do what you want 99% of the time. They aren't biddable and tend to be scared of everything. While I admit that mine is super athletic and would make an insanely good com...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

And your in California if I remember right. Apparently coydogs are a somewhat natural occurrence there, more so than on the East coast anyway. http://www.humanesociety.org/news/news/2011/08/coyote_hybrid_082511.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Those two have more obviously coy fe...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

Looks like one of the Windstorm coydog pups. Thanks for the response. I was looking around the hybrid area and just noticed the coydog breeder photos. I guess I should start positing there since it's clear that Acacia isn't a full coyote for sure. I'm pretty excited because next Saturday will be th...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

But the same can be said of even verified coydogs https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/552875_10151857245915157_973630617_n.jpg I think it can be nearly impossible to tell just from looking at their photos and none of the commercial tests test for coyote dna markers yet. I like your answer ...

TamanduaGirl wrote:Yeah they look like pure coyotes. The breeder who crosses collies to coyotes gets collie looking coydogs not wild coyote looking ones.

Do these recent photos convince anybody that Acacia is at least part coyote? She sleeps and walks differently than a normal dog.

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

Those coyote collie mixes that are known to be mixes because they come from a breeder look nothing like coyotes either. I'm sure it's not easy to determine from a few photos. Yeah, it's just a guess either way. Without an actual dna test that includes coyotes in the sample we really have no idea. N...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

Sorry but that's not a coy mix, looks nothing like one. I recall you saying you adopted her/him from the shelter and that you just decided she/he was a coyote mix that they said she/he was just a mixed breed of dog which that's all she/he looks like. Well, she does very much look like this other co...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

Acacia's owner hasn't posted here in a very long time. I assume they have since left the board altogether. Actually, I do check up every now and then but I don't always post because I don't want to get into an argument with anybody. I like really like this site though and will continue to check up ...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

I rather like coyotes. I used to have a coydog when I was young; 3/4 dog, 1/4 coyote. Not much of a mix, I know, but you could certainly tell it with him. He looked like a dog mostly, but had a ton of distinctively "non-dog" traits that made him a mess to deal with. I still absolutely lov...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

Mommy coyote and daddy a dog would do it just fine as she would raise the pups wild. Even a feral momma dog who mated a coyote would do a pretty good job of having wild acting young since not raised with people. I agree. A wild raised animal with no exposure to people, never knowing that people won...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

Anyway, this is a coydog. Even with my trained eye, I can't spot the "dog" in that coydog. But it's still labeled coydog. http://www.nashvillecoyotes.com/100_2133_a.jpg Acacia's coat is like that of the one sarajeku posted except her fluff is white and the roots are white. The bla...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

Just found a few pictures of coyotes, some in California, that have similar features to Acacia. Any opinions? http://www.nativeanimalrescue.org/coyote-lore-living-with-california-coyotes/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://cdfgnews.wordpress.com/2011/05/25/dfg-recommends-caution-a...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

The reason why I posted coyotes with summer coats was because those were the only pictures that I could find that matched Acacia's color. The first picture is of Acacia though so I hope that you didn't think that they were all of random coyotes. I had a feeling that was why you picked those photos,...

Re: Is it possible to domesticate Coyotes?

Instead she has a pure white undercoat with white roots that go up into every hair. If you were to trim her coat to just above the roots she would be pure white. That isn't banding. Wild banding should have three or more shades or colors on a hair shaft. It's my understanding that it's fairly commo...
