Re: Help with handling an almost adult raccoon

For oral meds, try giving the pill sandwiched in a little peanut butter between two small cookies. I buy teddy grahams just for this purpose. Let him try a sample one with a little smear of peanut butter first so that he can see that its something REALLY good, and then the "payload" cookie...

Raccoon Enrichment: Anyone tried large parrot toys?

I was browsing toys this morning and found myself checking out large parrot puzzle toys. I've considered them before, but never tried them out. I figure if they're made to withstand large parrots, the they should hold up under coon abuse, right? Anyone given them a shot? Mainly taking about forage p...

Re: Shoulder Raccoon

Only going on personal experience here, but the shoulder antics tapered off with my little girl as she aged. When she was just a tiny little thing she spent a good bit of time on my shoulder, but I think you'll find (as I did) that as they get bigger it becomes less and less practical because they a...

Re: Looking for coon updates

Thank you both! I know I'm pretty fortunate to have a cat friendly coonie. She was raised around them, and I think that made a big difference. That, and any buddy we've introduced (with the exception of my hub's dog) has been just a youngster. Funny thing though... when I took Bowski in fo...

Re: Looking for coon updates

Its always a treat to see your gang Ana. They all look so content in their big family. That's pretty awesome that you found a trustworthy Santa with an interest in coons. I know its been a while since I've posted any updates, but I've been pretty busy lately and there hasn't been much to report anyw...

Re: Raccoon or other exotic limb amputation

I don't have any experience with fractures, but going by my experience with a somewhat disabled coon, I agree with DeweysMom, if he is a pet, then go for it! My girl has a neurological condition that has left her with a very unstable back-end. She has terrible balance, and falls down constantly. For...

Re: Infected turkey toe/toenail

Thanks for the reply TG. The vet called me back, but offered no help unless I bring her in for an exam... big surprise there. She was originally destined for the holiday table, but OF COURSE, I'm attached, so she's now strictly an "ornamental" turkey. But because of this, the hub re...

Infected turkey toe/toenail

A few weeks ago my 6 month old turkey hen Moe ripped off a toenail. At the time, it was hard to tell if she had actually ripped it off, or just broken it off really close to the quick. We weren't really sure what to do, so we just cleaned it and put some styptic powder on there, thinking that a band...

Re: Water Ideas For Issac the Coonie

You could try to approach the problem from the litter box end, and build a container for it. It won't solve the problem completely since that's such a small space to have both a litter box and a water bowl, but it might help contain it a little more. Here are some pics of our litter box box: box3.jp...

Re: New Recruit! No name yet, any suggestions?

Thank you all for the kind words and name suggestions! Well, part of the deal about him coming home was that my hub got to have final say on the name. For the first few days since we hadn't chosen a name, we were calling him "little dude" and eventually a moment of inspiration struck... we...

Anyone else having coat issues?

Giz has been having a bad fur month. icon-sad I know its normal for them to go through the "unfortunate" patchy phase during the change of seasons, and she's never been an exception there, but it just seems a little late for the spring shed. I mean, I'm in Florida! It hasn't been cold here...

New Recruit! No name yet, any suggestions?

Well, we'd been kicking around the idea for a while, and yesterday decided to take the plunge and bring home another kitten. In a household with two dogs and a coon, we knew we had to start young, and hope we made a good choice for personality... I think we have a winner! This little dude (as yet un...

Re: Wild Raccoon Neighbors

Thanks for the imput. I was really surprised that the officer suggested moving them. The biggest hurdle there being that we couldn't know how old the kits were before trapping mom. I wouldn't try it for just that reason. To do that to a nursing mama and her kits is unconscionable. Agreed. As long as...

Wild Raccoon Neighbors

I have new neighbors! We have a HUGE tree in our backyard (about 50 yards from the corner of the house) that has a perfect hollow in one the main trunks on the backside. Last year we had a family of owls nesting there, but since we've cleared most of the brush from the area, the owls didn't come bac...

I'm so sorry to hear that Pat.
You've had more than your fair share in the past year. Hang in there.
