Re: Why are birds the forth most popular pet?

Monkeys look like furry little humans. So obviously it's slavery. Or something. While parrots are "just stupid birds". No matter how much science proves their intelligence, they are still too different from us, and not as cool as elephants or dolphins, to receive that status from the gener...

Re: UGH - Smooshed faced chihuahuas

Almost all small dogs, save for some terriers and the Italian greyhound, are brachycephalic. We commonly think of pugs, pekes and French bulldogs as brachycephalic, but pomeranians and chihuahuas are, as well. https://farm1.static.flickr.com/135/325155090_07058c484b.jpg http://www.yourdog.co.uk/imag...

Re: what is the easiest exotic cat to own?

I hate to be boring, but I doubt getting an F2 is a good idea if you have no previous experience with wild and/or hybrid cats. So get some "transition" animals, like a purebred Bengal (low content Asian leopard cat hybrid), or work with some wild cats/hybrids at some facility somewhere, to...

Re: Can someone list some exotic birds.

Pionus parrots are kind of sensitive, and males can get aggressive, but they're not as bad as the smaller Poicephalus or larger Amazons. You're asking about a lot of animals, which is good, but you probably need to narrow down what you want in an animal. Parrots and birds of prey for example, have a...

Re: What kinda of birds of prey can you keep in the USA?

I gave up on the idea of birds of prey for me, partly because I lost interest (I'm more into the smart and exotic birds - birds of prey seem rather stupid, unlike predatory mammals - crows would be tons more fun than raptors I think), partly because it seems in the states (if I move there), you have...

Re: Can someone list some exotic birds.

If you want quiet birds, the best are probably pigeons. I don't know what most softbills sound like. But pretty much any other bird than a parrot is going to be an aviary (outside, definitely not apartment) bird. They hop from perch to perch, rather than climb, so anything much larger than a finch i...

Re: Can someone list some exotic birds.

What kind of exotic birds? Basically all birds but poultry and pigeons count as "exotic".
Do you want parrots? Softbills? Birds of prey? Finches and other tiny birds?
softbillsforsale.com shows a lot of exotic birds on the market that are not parrots.

Re: CITES confuses me

And what are your thought on the ESA? I know pretty much nothing about it, but I know sometimes regulations intended to help species, actually does the opposite by in effect making captive breeding efforts much more difficult.

Is a repeal being discussed, or is that media sensationalism?

African Civet

Thought you guys would love to see this. It's an African Civet at Tbilisi Zoo, Georgia, where I've been three times. The videos are from my second and third visits (September last year, April this year). This animal is SO gorgeous and many of us in here would love it if they were in the pet trade. I...

If it's the urine, does this change with castration? Or is that not recommended?

CITES confuses me

What's really up with CITES in exotic mammals? Before I know I asked about tigers and jaguars, and got the answer that because tigers are crossed and considered "generic", they are exempt, while if you wanted a pure tiger, it would be different. Easy enough. I know the EU has different (or...

Re: So can hyenas be kept as pets

I would love a striped hyena, but due to their large size and more difficult legality, I'd be very happy with a little aardwolf as well. Me and hubby plan to farm insects anyway (certainly it must be less complicated to feed large hyenas, simply lots of fresh meat, bones and intestines).

Re: Which Nordic country you think is the most exotic friendly?

Europe really is quite crap with its exotics laws. Only the UK has a DWA (dangerous wild animal) license instead, Ireland is very unrestricted, and also Croatia and Turkey, as I understand, but that's central Europe and barely-eastern Europe. I'm either moving to the US, to Ireland, or even to my hu...
