Re: Sleeping in cage

OK, back on topic, then, Yatzee... Yes, they can be kept in a 'cage', but a very large one - one that wouldn't really be considered a cage, but rather an enclosure. A small, raccoon-proofed spare room will do, or a specially built outdoor enclosure. Anything less than an 8'X10' enclosure is too smal...

Re: Sleeping in cage

Still, please be cautious when allowing people to visit/interact with your boy. One bite or scratch reported to authorities, and off with his head (to check for rabies). I'd truly like to know why this 'rabid raccoon' phenomenon continues to be perpetuated. Yes, they can get and pass on rabies. So c...

Re: Sleeping in cage

If taking your raccoon out in public, please ensure HIS safety by knowing local/state laws. Not sure about FL, but in PA, we are NOT permitted to take our raccoons off home premises except for vet care, selling or breeding purposes. Getting caught can get you a fine, at the least, and seizure at the...

Re: Raccoon Cough?

If they're just learning to drink water or formula out of a water dish, sometimes they will aspirate a little, just because they haven't learned to lap it correctly yet. Some still kind of suck and lap until they get the hang of it. (Does that make sense??) Not sure if that was the cause for either ...

Re: smoked bones, are they bad?

OMG, no - please don't! I've tried a couple different "smoked" brands over the years, and ALL of them shatter and can end up with needle-sharp slivers that could do abundant damage if ingested. These things shouldn't be legal to sell!! I'm not sure if it's the "smoking" process t...

Re: Diahrea issues

I’ve been halfing her kmr with water. Not quite clear on what you wrote... Are you using less KMR and more water?? If so, I think you might try doing it the other way around, and making it LESS watery. She needs more bulk to harden up her stools, and less water. You could try adding some plain yogu...

Re: Introducing new raccoon

YES!! Absolutely, females can kill babies that aren't theirs. You must keep them separated until he's about 6 months old, then allow them to acclimate to each other gradually. If you can somehow separate your enclosure into 2 pens and allow them to meet with fencing between them, that would be best....

Re: New Baby Raccoon questions

If you do a switch-over to the KMR, obviously you must do it incrementally - which I'm sure you know. If you've raised other exotics, you are well aware of the turmoil that can ensue from ANY little change in diet. Is there a particular reason why you want to switch? If the Esbilac is working for hi...

Re: Concerned about leaving coon for extended time

Wow. Gone four weeks. That's a tough one... Yes, he's definitely gonna miss you, but if you have time to allow him to acclimate to the house sitter before you leave, that would be best. Try to have the house sitter take care of him WHILE YOU"RE there so he knows that the house sitter is 'safe'....

Re: How do I find out if a vet near me will look after a fox?

I simply asked my horse/dog/cat vet hospital if they'd see my raccoons, and they said yes, but also said they really didn't know the species, having worked with so very few of them. I find that I've needed to really educate myself, and in turn, educate them. The vet who mainly handles my raccoons is...

Because they can. Because they are turds. And because they know doing something like that will irritate the hoomans.

Re: Need A Companion

That size would work for a raccoon - IF not enclosed in it 24/7. But that is way too small for a fox. Hop on over to the fox part of this forum to see some fantastic examples of fox enclosures.

Re: Need A Companion

If all else fails, you could try a skunk, fox or a ferret as a companion. I believe those species ARE legal in your state, but please double-check with your game commission. Also, there are a few people who have coatimundis and raccoons together, but I'm not sure if coatis are legal in your state.
