Re: Raccoons and poison?

I think I ended up just forcing mine to wean off. I believe in the wild they are weaned by 16 weeks of age. When I had my boys, they were on my somewhat uh...experimental diet. No dog food. Just meats, bones, organs in proper proportions then fresh vegetables and fruits, sometimes nuts and quality ...

Re: Bottle feeding

Welcome Ripley - not only to the board but also to the joys of living with a raccoon! Please post pics of your lil guy (or gal!) Definitely find out what the breeder is feeding and if it's different from what you plan to feed, it really should be switched over gradually. Any abrupt changes in diet a...

Re: Raccoons and poison?

Like Ana, I'm concerned about the huge caloric values in the milk. I have no problem whatsoever sitting down a couple of times a day and having that 'quiet time' with Dewey as he nurses. I totally enjoy it because it IS good for bonding, plus I also use that time to groom him, look him over for tick...

Re: Raccoons and poison?

Wondering, Ana, how Corso is coming along on the formula weaning process? I'm happy to report that Dewey is beginning to appreciate other foods. Finally. He's now liking turkey and chicken, and fruits like cantaloup and blueberries, which he turned his nose up at a month ago, are now perfectly accep...

Interactive Toys

While looking for interactive toys for dogs & cats (just TRY finding toys specific for raccoons...), I ran across this company's products and thought I'd share. http://www.trixie.de/en/grp/Dog_Toys,14817" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I found that Overstock.com carries many of th...

Re: Crazy Coon Baby!

Awww - she's so cute but yet still SO TINY!! She most likely won't hurt herself attacking her tail and other appendages, but if she does, you may want to consult a vet... ??? My 3 month old is attacking his tail lately, when he's in hyper-active mode (which is going on day THREE of terrible terrible...

Re: Raccoons and poison?

Ana, I'm having the same sort of problem as you: Trying to find that 'magic' food that helps wean them off formula. Dewey is 3 months old now, and STILL on the bottle - 5 oz formula 3-4 times a day (I add Gerbers baby food of some sort, and a little applesauce, and to increase bulk, some baby rice c...

I think that advice would be good for not just Dewey, but for me as well!

Re: Raccoons and poison?

Been wondering the same, Ana...

Thanks, pat - I've been wondering if chocolate was OK. I almost gave Dewey an Oreo the other night when he just about ripped my arm off to get mine, but I didn't know if it would be safe, so I didn't. So I guess he can have a bite of one, anyhow.

Re: Raccoon Vaccines

OK - so it's open for discussion whether or not raccoons need both the feline and the canine distemper vaccinations. What IS established is that we definitely want KILLED virus vaccines. OK, so can SOMEone, ANYone tell me where the heck to get them? As posted previously, my lil guy had a reaction to...

Re: HELP WITH BABY RINGTAIL

IMO - and I'm far from expert! - I would think pooping once a day is perfectly fine. If you think about it, the formula is mostly water and what isn't is being absorbed for nutrition is mostly being eliminated via urine, right??

He's a cutie - hope he continues to do well for you!

Re: Vaccinating Your Raccoon

I'll have to check the vials and see what the labels say. If it doesn't specify, I'll call the vet's office and ask them, and if it's NOT the recombinant, I won't give it. Guess I'll be out the $25 for that shot and probably another $25 for the recombinant to give, but I'd rather that than put my li...

Re: Vaccinating Your Raccoon

With the first vet, I had assurance from him it was going to be recombinant, and he also said because my guy is under 3 months old, we'd do a puppy dose or half-dose of the rabies now and when I bring him in in a few months for castration, they'd do a booster rabies at full dose. I ASSUMED the first...

Vaccinating Your Raccoon

I'm sure this goes without saying, but I'm going to say it anyhow: Watch your coonies closely after their vaccinations!! I took my lil buddy for his first vaccinations the other day. Prior to the appointment, I had had a in-depth and lengthy discussion with the one vet at the practice, and we had ag...

Re: Vacations/Raccoon baby sitters

This is a tough one, for sure. Like Ash said, "No hands on". That's why the enclosure for my guy is a 2-stage pen. In the first part, I keep his food, drinking water, pool and litter box, in the second area is his nest box, climbing trees, etc. When I have someone critter sit, I insist tha...
