Re: His name is Charlie

Thanks for sharing your method of sneaking the collar on, TamanduaGirl! I certainly will give it a shot. Dewey is EASILY distracted by treats, so this just might work!

Re: His name is Charlie

Deweysmom, honestly I just did it the way I originally did with my dogs. I made sure the collar was a good fit, just snug but not tight and after putting it on letting him throw his fit. After he calmed a little I started offering him goodies and petting him. Anytime he fussed with it is distract h...

Dewey's 15 Seconds (err, FIVE seconds) of Fame!

So our vet was updating their website and asked us to bring Dewey in for the photo/video shoot because they wanted to show that they care for ALL animals, 'normal' or exotic. Dewey's time in the spotlight? Exactly five seconds. That's all the longer he behaved before biting the vet's hand. I ...

Re: His name is Charlie

Jinx, wondering how you got him used to the collar? We tried to get one on Dewey once about 2 weeks ago and my gosh, you woulda thought we were trying to kill him! He pitched a royal fit. And I didn't want to make it too tight on him, but too loose and he had it off in under 3 seconds... Any suggest...

Re: The Adventure Begins

He is absolutely handsome with his little blond looks! I love him! It sounds like both he and you are adjusting well. After reading so many of your posts, I feel you to be above-average in the common sense animal logic end of things and this - IMO - is what's turning this iffy situation into a succe...

Fabulous photos!!! Would LOVE to have the opportunity to get this close to the ones that live in my area, but the best I can do is get them with the trail cam!

Re: 7 week-old won't eat

Just keep offering different stuff to him. It'll happen - EVENTUALLY! Cheerios seems to be the solid starter-food, in my experience. Also could try fruit-filled breakfast bars (or poptarts). Sweet-tasting (and crunchy!)foods will encourage them more so than blander, soft foods. You could also try sc...

Re: ohio raccoon

Even if your raccoon isn't legal, you may still find a vet who will be willing to treat him. I found one willing to work with me to vaccinate the orphan we raised last year (even though it wasn't legal for me to have him, or for him to treat him), but I did NOT have him castrated because of eventual...

Re: Any one buying a raccoon this year?

Just thought I'd share a photo of my kids playing together. After a few weeks of cautious introductions and ever-watchful eyes, I feel pretty comfortable that Dewey and our dogs, Pilot (Aussie) and Xoey (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever) are best buds!

Re: Raccoon Experience

I agree with pat. This 'older' raccoon - even if he has been handled daily since birth - is going to be a tough one to bond with you because of his age. If this is your first raccoon, I would HIGHLY advise waiting until you can get one who is much younger. Even those with raccoon experience may find...

Re: Bottle feeding

The only people that I would tell they shouldn't have a coon as a pet are those who cannot understand that a coon isn't a cat or dog and never will be or those who aren't willing or able to make a commitment to care for it for life, even when its inconvenient. I totally agree! And this doesn't just...
