Re: my beagle?

Cedar was I think 11 at the time. We still have his brother, Cinnamon (my baby boy!), who is going to be 13 in March, so he was fairly old (he didn't look or act it though). Cinnamon is are oldest dog. Esther, Kitty and Gerbil are all about 12 right now. Our two young dogs (only a couple years old) ...

Re: my beagle?

I could tell something was wrong with Cedar (the dog with the mass) because the way he would stand up and lay down wasn't right. You couldn't see the mass (it was inside of him) but something was just wrong with the way he would lay down or stand. We took him to the vet and they did an x-ray and the...

Re: my beagle?

It's so hard. I'm so sorry that you guys have to go through this. Our last dog we lost, Cedar, has a mass in his stomach. A friend of ours is a vet and she actually removed it (it was huge). He passed a few days later from post-surgery complications. This means the surgery worked, it was likely some...

Re: my beagle?

Oh no, that's always hard news to hear. I do know from what I've heard people in the rescue community say that old dogs with lots of health problems can live happy lives with the right medications. I'm not sure what they are though. None of our old dogs ever really got the chances to go on medicatio...

Re: Fur and skin color terms

Thanks for sharing this!
I'm going to school for animal genetics (with a specific interest in coloration and other mutations in those kept in captivity), so I love to read accurate information. So much out there just isn't accurate.

Re: my beagle?

The cold could be making it worse, since cold dogs tend to be more tense and that can make it hurt worse. We have six dogs (use to have more but we've lost three to old age). Lots of experience with old dogs but not really what is the cause, since we don't have money for all the tests (and they are ...

Re: my beagle?

Dogs with pulled muscles or nerve problems walk differently than with arthritis. Arthritis is stiff in the joint areas but not usually too tight. Most of our older dogs have gotten arthritis, some quite badly, and it usually includes limping and avoiding bending the legs, trouble getting on furnitur...

Re: my beagle?

Flea meds can be scary, I've heard the stories. We use to use one you applied to the skin (frontline), but the fleas in the area became immune and our dogs were so miserable. Our house was crawling with them, we all had bites on our bodies, I couldn't go into my bed room anymore, we had to shave the...

Re: my beagle?

Glad you got a vet appointment. Hope it all turns out okay! Lucy does seem pretty young to have arthritis, but our four older doggies are all feeling the winter weather and walking a little stiffer. Cinnamon has been limping on and off and can't go on daily walks or he gets too sore. Our dogs have a...

Re: Recommendations

I might try asking your vet. If meat makes the first two ingredients, I think it should be okay, but I'm certainly not an expert on animal nutrition. These vegetables are good for dogs in small amounts, but in dog food they are usually just fillers (make more food for cheaper). I hear rice is suppos...

Re: Recommendations

It sure can be hard to find the perfect food for our pets. I do want to clear up some confusion though. It isn't grain-free foods that cause health issues, it is foods that are heavy in potato, lentils, peas and legumes. So meat-based foods are still perfectly fine for our doggies, it is foods with ...

Re: Leopard seals?

Most pinnipeds are too large to do well in captivity. They would require too much space and to keep their water clean is far too expensive (using chlorine is unhealthy for animals and can cause chronic health problems). Those kept tend to be those that were injured in the wild, are endangered (and s...

Re: wild fox question.

How coyotes travel depends on the season. During the winter they often travel alone, during the spring and summer you may see them alone but they live in pairs. When their young are old enough they may travel as a group for a short time. It also depends on the location (wilderness, forest, suburbs) ...

Re: Pet jaguar personality?

I've never heard that one, that's interesting and would be quite intelligent. I have read, however, that they possibly use other forms of mimicry and luring to attract prey. They may use their tail as a lure while fishing and they may use specific sounds to interest prey animals into coming closer. ...
