Porcupine in the home?

Postby prk22 » Thu Jan 17, 2013 3:35 am

I was looking for stories of direct, or even indirect, household based porcupines. Experiences in (any) training... temperamental observations...or appreciation for age of adoptions.

Thanks!

I don't think anyone here has kept porcupines. But I do know that they make really great indoor pets from what I've read. Bottle-raised ones can be very affectionate, but even wild-caught ones tame down pretty easy.

What kind of porcupine were you thinking of? Like North American or the African porcupines? The African porcupines seem a bit more common.

I don't know whether or not they litter-train. I believe I read that they do, but I'm not sure.

Are you thinking of getting one? They are really neat.

I actually am. I am focusing on European and some random other conservation species...but I'm in a place to finally get a few more, and I wanted to go after some smart critters based here in North America...otters and porcupine are at the top of my list.

The South American porcupines are real sweet. ChasingTail has and breeds them.

Are those the ones with the prehensile tails?

Prk22--That's really neat. That would be really cool if you were able to get those animals. So you'd breed them then?

Hmmm...I could not find ChasingTail's profile from the search box. Do you have a website or further info on them?

Would a porcupine be an indoor or outdoor pet? I saw some at the zoo a few weeks ago.... they're interesting. I wouldn't want one though, I like to pet animals, and that's not something to recommended to do with a porcupine

They could be indoor animals but they are rodents so the biggest issue is likely chewing.
