looking for a fennec owner in P.A to help me get some exp!

Postby silverfox22 » Wed Sep 17, 2014 12:59 am

Hi all!
I'm looking for someone who is in Pittsburgh PA and owns a fennec( or any fox really) so I can get some info and experience under my belt and possibly be able to get a fox in the future!
I'm looking and hopefully somebody will reach out.

I'm always online, and if I'm not u can reach me at crystalbayliss@rocketmail.com
I'd love to figure out when I can do this because I am so excited!

doubtful there is anyone in pittsburgh that has a fennec, or any fox for that matter.
if you are in the city limits, most likely, the city will will now allow foxes. icon-sad
a few years ago, there was suppose to be someone in sewickley that was breeding fennecs.
however, this person moved from another state, thinking it was legal to breed/own fennecs.

the last I heard, fennecs are not allowed in pa. you could call the pgc in harrisburg (ask for permits dept)
and ask them. also, you would have to contact your local area (township/city/county) to make sure
they will allow a fox. you will need a verification letter from them when applying for a permit.

I think there is a red fox breeder in pa, they are are in eastern pa though.

as for experience, ask the pgc what type of experience is acceptable.

here is the info on the steps to owning a fox:

here is a Q&A for foxes:

pgc can be difficult to deal with. lots of different steps to go thru.
you have to have the permit before you get the fox.

if you need help, let us know..

One way to figure that out is to search online. Type county name +animal ordinances. OR call the county offices. ;)

Yes! Exactly. When you find the laws, look and see when they were enacted. If they are old, you may wish to call the county office to verify that they are up to date. ;)

You do the exact same thing for your city. Sometimes it can be difficult to find, but it's always best to find the law first, and THEN call to confirm it.

if you live in a "city", I think you will have less chance of owning a fox.
if you live in a township or more of rural area, you will have a better chance.
http://www.allentownpa.gov/Portals/0/fi ... ations.pdf

as ash mentioned, it is best to contact township or city to see if a fox is legal.
get info in writing if they say yes. you will need a letter from the city/twp approving a fox from the pgc when
applying for your permit.

if you live in a city (with a lot of houses in the neighborhood) I do not recommend a red fox.
these type of foxes need pens as adults. otherwise, they will destroy and stink up your house.

the last I heard about fennec foxes, they are not allowed in PA.
if you are allowed to have "red foxes" the bigger your pen, the better.
for fennecs, they don't need a pen. but, they do not litter train well.

you can call harrisburg 717-787-4250 (ask or the permits department) the guy that is in the permits department is a pretty nice guy and really tries to get you a correct answer. (unlike the other others that worked in the dept)
you could also ask where you can get experience if you are allowed the red foxes.
I was told a job at the zoo  but, I think it don't matter where you get the experience. pgc requires a letter from the person that helped you with the 2-year experience.

if you are allowed a fox, please make sure you completely understand their behavior and proper needs before you get one.

have you decided if you want a red or fennec?

if you had any type of experience from where you lived previously, that will work. but,
they will need to write a letter explaining what you did and how many hours you put into learning.
it's always better to have too much than not enough. when I first applied for my fox permit, they put me
through hell, mostly the 2-year experience. the first letter was not enough info for them.
took me 6 months to get the permit.

I think the 2-year experience is the hardest part, as long as your local area accepts fox ownership.

while you are waiting, please do as much research as possible to make life easier for yourself and your fox.
it is very important that you understand their behavior. lots of good info within this forum.

please feel free to ask if you have any questions...........
we are here to help and to be honest......

I want all of them lol.
I have not really chosen yet. If fennec's r not able to kept as pets, then i will get a red. ( i wonder if my favorite fox is legal here... The silver fox.)

Silver foxes are a color mutation of the red fox (vulpes vulpes). Pat has a beautiful silver. :)

as ash mentioned "red fox" have many different colors.

actually, my permit classifies all 3 of my foxes as "silver fox" but, they are all the red fox family.
the silver fox is the first fox I got. guess that is why all 3 are classified as "silver"
here is a page of all three of mine:
http://sybilsden.com/fox/foxmain.htm

as I mentioned, the best thing to do is call the pgc and ask what you need for a red fox or a fennec.

A lot of times places classify all ranch foxes as silver and all wild foxes as red, for vulpes vulpes. A lot of the studies and literature on ranched fox all says silver but it applies to all of them.
