One or Two Fennec Foxes?

Postby Jess2569 » Thu Jan 15, 2015 3:26 am

Hi All,

I was looking for some advice. Myself and my partner are looking to buy a Fennec Fox, and as we are at work during the day we have been thinking about buying two so they do not feel lonely.

Does anyone have any advice or opinions on this? Should we consider the same sex or a male and female?

We did previously have a fox cub, so we are familiar with the temperaments and requirements when owning a Fennec.

Thanks in advance,
Jess

welcome to sybils message board.

I personally do not have any experience with fennec foxes. usually for most exotics it is best to get one at time,
only so it will bond with owner. having two, they might bond to each other.

what kind of fox cub did you have? if it was red family, or grey. keep in mind, they litter train fairly easy.
fennecs will not. they might use a litter pan, but, overall, they mess anywhere even on their bedding.
this is only what some of the owners has mentioned.

I am not trying to talk you out of getting a fennec, just thought you might want to know some of a fennec's behavior.

I am sure the other members can give you more info on them.

I generally recommend getting just one at first. Because for me, it made the experience really nice, and made my next experience (when I got my second fox a few years later) even more awesome. When I got Ifrit (second fox), I just felt... relaxed. When I first got Fable (my first fox), he was a bit overwhelming at first, and I really needed to adjust to him.

So that's why I recommend one as your starter. If you've owned another fox kit before, that shows you have some experience, but there is a big difference between owning a kit for a few months to owning an adult for several years.

I suggest maybe seeing if you guys could maybe make your work schedules a bit different? (I know, easier said than done  ). It's really important to spend time with exotic animals when they are babies. In my personal experience with red foxes, the baby stage is crucial. When they're an adult, they've settled into who they are and don't need AS much attention (not saying not to spend time with it, of course). But spending time with a baby one is really important.

That being said, fennecs (and all foxes, actually), spend a HUGE amount of time sleeping. So depending on how long you and your partner are gone for, he may just be having his nap time.

Hi All,

Thank you for the advice. After have lengthy discussions with the seller and our vet (who happens to be a fox specialist and loves Fennec’s which is a bonus!) we took the plunge and now have two female kits who we have fallen in love with. To begin with they cried a bit when separated (being held separately) but are now much OK. They sleep virtually on top of each other and love playing together, the only time we have to keep them apart is when feeding. They have also bonded to us quickly, following us around and responding to a whistle which is great. They are leaving the bed to do the toliet on the pad so fingers crossed they keep this up! We are literally trying to spend every second with them to bond with them when they are young.

With regards to the work schedule, my work are happy for my to go home at lunch to feed them, until they older.

So far we feel we have made the right decision but will keep you posted.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Aaaaaaw... I'm assuming those are the two in your profile pic? They're absolutely snuggly adorable. :) I'm sure they're going to be awesome pets for you, so congrats on the new additions to the family.

If you have time to post pictures, I'd love to see them. Young fennecs are so adorable, and I miss seeing pics of them. And yes, what did you decide to name them? They are such cuties--little doll babies.
