What Are All The Vaccinations That Gray Foxes Need?

Postby Amiya54 » Mon Jan 02, 2017 1:44 am

I would like to know the right vaccinations that gray foxes require such as either or not they need a distemper prevention vaccine (which I've hear they are prone to easily get if you want to take your gray on walks or such).
I have asked this same question on a fox group on facebook (The Pet fox Society) and for distemper A nice person replied with...

"RECOMBITEK® rDistemper"
RECOMBITEK rDistemper offers safe, proven, efficacious distemper protection to your canine patients, without the potential risks associated with modified-live distemper vaccines.

I also asked if a gray fox required a rabies vaccination which another person responded with

IMRAB®3 is recommended for the vaccination of healthy cats, dogs, sheep, cattle, horses, and ferrets 12 weeks of age and older for prevention of disease due to rabies virus.

So the real question is if Gray foxes require this kind of distemper vaccination and if these two are same for Grays. Any more vaccinations that you all know of would really come in handy :D

RECOMBITEK® rDistemper(c4) has been used safely on grays as it is canary pox based recombinant vaccine so no chance of catching anything from the vaccine.

Also UC Davis vaccinated California Island Fox, a subspecies of Gray Fox, using MerialPUREVAX® FERRET Distemper vaccine., which is also a canary pox based recominant.

IMRAB-3 is fine for rabies. Required or not is a personal decision. It should protect them against rabies if they are exposed it wont likely protect them from being killed to test for rabies if a bite or scratch is reported. Knowing the fox has it's shots though might make a person less likely to report the incident to their DR.

Wild gray fox have tested positive for the antibodies, this may or may not mean they get ill with it(I have never heard of a case of a fox ill with it though), there is no recombinant or killed vaccine for parvo though. Some people give RECOMBITEK Canine Parvo to their foxes but it like all others available is MLV, there's a chance of a fox getting the disease from an MLV though I've not heard of a case of that with parvo. Some just don't vaccinate. Dogs get canine parvo, cats get feline parvo(fpv), foxes in the wild get fox parvo. It's possible, but unproven, that an FPV shot would provide some protection since all the parvos are related and there is a recombinant version of it available, though the fox forms are more distantly related to the others than cpv and fpv are to each other.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3603882/ documents the FPV’s ability to infect foxes, and mentions a study where they did not get CPV when injected with the live virus but do FPV. Plus that the fox form of parvo is a close mutation of FPV.
