PIJAC? Our enemy?

Postby Ash » Mon Aug 25, 2014 4:17 pm

http://usherp.org/2014/08/22/pijac-hires-animal-rights-fat-cat-as-ceo/

So PIJAC hired an animal rights guy and made him their ceo... This does NOT bode well... How the heck did this happen!?

More info if you click the link...

This is just bad news.

I'm still not sure what to think of this. Hopefully USARK will be able to get some good info on this.

I am just disgusted. This man is 100% animal rights. PIJAC was one of the few organizations we could depend on, and now look... Even if the man was all for exotic animal ownership, he's still not a good choice if what they say is true about how he's managed finances, etc. before. But the fact that he has worked for animal rights for SO many years and has stated himself that he does not want exotics to be owned, THAT is what worries me here.

If he turns around and uses this money in any other way OTHER than supporting exotic animal ownership, then PIJAC is a scam.

This is the same as if they asked Ingrid Newkirk to come and be their CEO. Or if Rexano started endorsing Carol Baskin.

I guess we'll have to wait and see, but until then, I no longer support PIJAC. Far too risky... Usually I say "wait and see..." Maybe I'll be proved wrong, and I sure would love to be wrong!

Really a shame. PIJAC was really the only big organization that I could trust.

PIJAC Canada promotes the banning of exotics. I was so disappointed after seeing that the US branch was pro-exotics, but now that's changing too. That sucks. Sorry guys.

He made a reply to these concerns on their site:

Still seems a strange choice.

I would feel better if that was about exotics in general and not just reptiles.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see but it it's hard to believe all his views would be changed now but it does happen that people go from anti-exotic to pro sometimes.

I believe people can change. And that would be great if he did. Maybe he's just there for the business aspect of it. In other words--maybe he changes what he believes based on who he's serving. But if he has indeed changed--and that is entirely possible--that would be great.

BUT, this paragraph bothers me:

In retrospect, given the nature of the ASPCA’s mission, I had a rather limited view during my tenure as the organization’s CEO, responding in the field to some of the worst reptile types and handlers who represent a small minority — not the majority. My view in light of those circumstances formed the basis for some statements I made during that period and campaigns that were developed under my leadership. I know now that I was misinformed about the majority of reptiles that do not pose a public risk and the breeders and suppliers who work diligently to provide healthy reptiles and safe handling information. - See more at: http://www.pijac.org/blog/my-stance-rep ... DNVx0.dpuf

What are "worst reptile types" as opposed to "bad handlers?" That just sounds like he's classing groups of reptiles as "bad." For example: corn snakes, ball pythons, iguanas = good. Venomous, crocodilian, large constrictors = bad.

Also the part about how the majority of reptiles do not pose a public risk. Reptiles do NOT pose a "public" risk.... The only people who have ever been killed by them are handlers, or children of handlers. That's not public risk. That's "private" risk. VERY different. He's saying the minority pose a public risk, which no, they do not....
