amish girl shot and killed in ohio

Postby pat » Wed Dec 21, 2011 4:37 pm

this happened near mt hope ohio.

now, why is it, that this incident will be pushed under the rug.
why not put an emergency ban on guns like they did with animals.

the person that shot this gun, shot it up in the air.
I don't know anything about guns, but, common sense tells me, this is not the thing to do.

It says he was cleaning his gun when it happened. So it was accidental. But the commenters are still calling it a "shooting", even though the bullet traveled over a mile before it hit the girl.

yep, but, also heard he was emptying his gun. I assumed shooting out any bullets that may be in the gun. that is what it said on another news page and on TV.

As I said, I don't know anything about guns. but, either way, if one is going to clean their gun,
I would think they would make sure the bullets are out first.

that really surprised me that the bullet traveled that far. WOW

Yeah bullets can travel really far especially from riffles. There probably was no clear view for him to have been shooting at her. A bullet shot into the air can come down really far away.

There are a lot of people who claim a bullet shot into the air can't travel fast enough coming back down to kill anyone but they need to tell that to all the people who have actually died that way. Their science is wrong. They can't travel faster than their terminal velocity when falling, true, but their terminal velocity is still enough to kill.

Well, Mythbuster's (I know, not very reliable source) tested it, and if you fire straight into the air, it's not going to come down fast enough to kill you. It'll give you a concussion, but not kill you.

However, if you shoot it off to an angle it can be really dangerous. :x

Was just gonna contribute the Mythbusters thing. There are legitimate reports of people being killed from randomly fired bullets, some over a mile away or more. I suppose this girl is just another tragic addition to that statistic.

I didn't see the mythbusters but heard about it. I think there are a few things they missed. One being a bullet does not need to pierce your skull to kill you. If you are laying down or it hits that soft spot in the shoulder it can avoid hitting bone altogether.

2 I don't believe they tried different caliber bullets. Different sized and weighted objects have different terminal velocities.

This covers the concept fairly well
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/rea ... comes-down
The .30 caliber were tested to find how fast they fall after shooting them straight up and it was 300 feet per second.
Mattoo's equation predicts that Hatcher's .30 caliber bullet, which has a small diameter in relation to its weight, will perforate the skin (and lodge in the underlying tissue) at only 124 feet per second. It's easy to believe such a bullet falling at 300 feet per second could kill you, especially if it struck you in the head.

I think they just went to a salt field and shot off some rounds, and saw how deeply they penetrated the ground, then used that to calculate how far it would penetrate human flesh/muscle/bone. They also just went to a few mortuaries and just asked if anyone there had been killed by a stray bullet, and they produced autopsy/police reports on them.

Why do people clean loaded guns? Thats a load of crap and always used as an excuse. I have heard that so many times. A 22 rifle can shoot over a mile away and still kill you. I check my chamber everytime I pick the gun up and befpre I clean it and after I shoot it.

I was just about to type something like that.
I too make sure my rifle and shotgun are "clear" before I even leave the firing point at the range I go to, it's not exactly hard and it does not even involve firing the gun!

Poor girl.
