Bear Owning and Careers

Postby sjdowney » Tue Jun 18, 2013 6:57 pm

Hi all! I am looking into raising bears. It's also been so very interesting to me but I am trying to learn as much as I can about it all. I keep reading that it is very expensive to raise bears, which makes a lot of a sense. I was wondering though, what kind of careers do people have when they need to dedicate so much time and attention to the bears? Also is there some special type of schooling that one can study do make a career with raising bears, besides breeding- I'm not looking to make money off of bears, but something that will support raising them.

are you referring to black bears?

it is important that you do as much research on bears.
the most common bear to raise in captivity if black bears.

there is a lot to be said about raising black bears.
I have 2, one is 12 the other is 11

there is a lot to consider prior to getting one.
1. are they legal in your area?
2. will your twp/county accept the fact you have a bear?
3. is there a water supply for a bear?
4. can you afford chainlink fence and a very sturdy house for it?
5. can you afford the food?
6. do you know of a good breeder? (this is very important)
7. will you be able to bottle feed it? (its a must)
8. are you willing to give up vacations?

the above is just basic questions.
here is a link to my care sheet (needs updated)

I don't know what you can do to make money from a bear.
if you plan on having one for educational purpose or show, they will need many many hours
of people contact.

feel free to ask further questions.

I am planning on doing this in the future and have everything planned- sadly not in the near future, but I love to plan everything before hand! If you don't mind me asking what do you do for a living, or maybe what is common among those who raise bears?

glad it will be a future plan. this will give you lots of time to prepare.
but, please remember to make sure bears are legal to own in your area.
I have seen a couple killed because the owners did not have a permit icon-sad

I am self-employed with a small business.

I was lucky a friend of mine gave me a lot of chain link fence.
I converted half my barn for the bears den.
hubby has a backhoe, so that came in handy with digging and even putting up the fence.

we kept expanding their pen, and still have plans to make it even bigger.
too small of a pen is not good for bears. after the addition, I hope to have about 1/2 or more pen size.
the size I have now, is pretty big. (biggest I have ever seen other bears in)
I still have chain link left for the addition.
