exotic bears in captivity?

Postby naja-naja » Wed Apr 08, 2015 9:13 am

Hi, I'm wondering is it only american brown bears and black bears that are legally kept in the private sector or are there more exotic species kept as well, i'm thinking specifically of sun bears and sloth bears. Sun bears seem like they would be better suited then for example, a brown bear due to their smaller size they would be easier to accommodate and the risk factor wouldn't be as high either imo.
Anybody know of anything like this? Thanks.

Anything endangered you need a federal license for.

Private sector, yes. Easy to get for a pet, no. I know someone with sloth bears but they are a zoo just not AZA. I'm sure none of them get sold as pets. You'd at last need USDA and able to prove experience and very responsible.

Who did you know with sloth bears, TG? They're really neat and I didn't expect anyone in the private sector to have them.

Chasing Tail.

Yeah they are cool. If I ever got a bear I'd like a sloth bear but I'm pretty sure I'll never have a bear.

I'd love to have a sloth, or a sun bear. I've never seen or heard of them being sold.

Of course, lol. She's got everything--I'd love to tour her place if I'm ever up there. I really hope she can get them breed. They're such cool creatures.

TG, it's your chance, lol! You could convince her to keep them boarded at her place until you got the room/property. ;)

Ha, I wish. I need to go buy a lotto ticket.

Sloth bears are like the anteaters of the bear world so I can't help but love them. They eat ants and termites and carry their young on their back :)

They're so cute. I'm sure one day you'll be able to get some--but you need a giant anteater first, lol. Because that'd be cool. :)

$11,000 for a breeding pair actually sounds like a good deal. Gotta start saving now. :icon-wink:

the fact that the ad says they produced cubs in January means that there is at least one other sloth bear in private hands as well. considering they are hand raised, and intact and able to breed, it is a steal for anyone in the northwest who has the experience needed to get them to breed again.

Aren't they endangered? That's probably why the price is so low--they can't cross state lines. She can only sell her animals in state, and there aren't that many people qualified to buy them. So she could be testing the waters.

They are endangered but I don't think they're on the USFW list so safe for trade.
