Grizzle has the worst wild reputation.

Define "mean".
Do you mean aggressive to humans or other animals, or curious, or a problem or something else? And in the wild or in captivity?

Concerning polar bears, somebody (I don't remember who it was) posted the link to this amazing video some time back:

Of course, that doesn't imply that all polar bears are gentle and friendly with dogs and wolves at all times and cases...

I think polar bears are considered "mean" because they are so large that even an accident can kill you. I dont really know but I think that a polar bear and a grizzly would be very similiar if hand raised. They are very closely related and there have even been a few amazing looking hybrids.

Blacks are more docile due to the omnivorous diet (others are more carnivore). IE a black bear doesnt see you as a meal like the other two would.

The person at the zoo said that grizzly bears, and black bears are just a different color, and live in different places. is that true?

wow that is totally wrong. They are completely different species. Even amongst brown bears there are almost 20 different subspecies like grizzly, kodiak, eurasian ect

this zoo worker should consider a new job.

I think the grizzly and polar bears could be more aggresive.
as mentioned, they could see a person as food.
guess it depends how hungry they are.

another factor could be if a momma has cubs and are pretty protective of them.

actually, on a few different animal shows, they said, the the grizzly will kill a black bear cub and eat it. grizzlies are also known for killing black bears

I have heard the panda could be agressive also.

People used to ride the wild black bears at the army base LONG ago when my dad was stationed there(way middle of nowhere Alaska). An old grizzly came wandered in and killed one of the black bear sows so someone killed him. My dad was given the hide but due to all the laws(even back then) he couldn't bring it back with him so gave it to the tribe that was there.

mary,
wow, those guys that rode the black bear, must have made friends with the bear first. most likely feeding him.
but, that is really facinating. do you happen to have any pictures of that?
I would love to see that.

some bears in the wilds can be friendly. lynn rogers has made many friends with black bears. some of the females would let him pick up her cubs..

No photos but that would have been cool to have some proof. He's not lying or he'd claim he rode one, lol. He didn't but some people did it. The higher ups did put a stop to it when they found out later. I believe they did feed them. Some would give them cans of beer but back then the cans were tougher made so they'd bite into them then drink the beer.
