Growing up Black Bear

Postby bear-ze » Sun Mar 15, 2009 3:57 pm

I don't know if anyone has watched this on Animal Planet, but I think it's a must see for bear lovers, "Growing up Black Bear."

It really gave me a lot of respect for the people who are bear owners. Little cubs give a whole new definition to the TERIBLE 2S!

yep, I have watched that several times.

there is something about these cubs that would be hard to give up, like those people did. but, they are alot of work.
guess we take the bad with the good..

I had sybil in the house with me her first year.
YEP, worse than terrible two's

frig always being open, cupboard doors, anything on the counter was fair game for her

but, on her nap time, she was an angel. she napped with the dogs, or on "her" rocking chair. the chair had a blanket on it, when I seen her take that blanket and cover herself up, I knew she ready for her nap

she was pretty good about that.
I would take her outside often, and she seemed to understand.

however, she use to sleep in bed with me, and I I didn't always take her out in the middle of the night.(guess I was too tired from chasing her all day  ) I later found she pooed beside the bed and the wall.
but, I never smelled it, because bear poo dont stink.
I noticed it when I pulled the bed out to clean. but, really wasn't too bad.

she don't poo or pee in her den or lower house. however, benny does, he goes by the door when it is cold outside, I think that irrates sybil.

I watched a grizzly bear show on Animal Planet a couple of months ago. It had Jennifer Aniston in it, and she was meeting the family who had these big beautiful grizzlies, and the husband would just wrestle with them. It was amazing how they bounded, but it was funny when Jennifer was trying to feed him.

Just having a bear in your house is a great feeling, thats if you both get along

I have watched all of the Growing Up series and out of all of them the walrus episode will steel your heart. I know it has nothing to do with bears but watch this one. They rerun them alot. I was blown away by it.

Hey Pat,

Are you sure you didn't put deodorizer in your bear's food, lol!! All I know is the 5 black bears and the 1 Russian grizzly that I used to care for, STINKEEEE!! But maybe the diet had something to do with it and the hot, humid Florida weather doesn't help either--wet bears are smelly too! But I wouldn't trade that kind of work for the world!!

Cynthia

I don't feed them meat. not sure if that is why.
the eat lots of fruits and snacks. also, eggs, lots of them..

their pen outside don't smell at all. maybe it is their diet.
