Hey Linus Im Mike I live in central Ohio and I have 6 black bears at my sanctuary. Grunt is my biggest he is somewhere near 600lbs now big baby and spoiled no doubt. I have 3 males and 3 females. Anything you need help with Im sure there are lots of us here that can answer your questions. Probably like most of us finding a qualified vet is the hardest thing too do. Bears are pretty hardy, at least mine have been and only needed a vet once so far. I worm my bears and can give most shots and oral meds. Dental care can get pretty hairy for you thats when you need a vet who knows what he or she is doing but for the most part bears are good at taking care of wounds and stuff. I dont mess with mother nature too much I like them too do what comes natural too them. You can pm me and also call me if you need some info. Pat is a big help too she has had bears longer than I have. Welcome too Sybils Den you will find alot of nice folks on here.

mike,

what do you use for worming your bears?

I keep wanting to get a stole sample on a vet visit, but, keep forgetting.

I am not sure what type of worms they can be suseptable to.

I took stole samples of my foxes and coons to the vet a couple months ago, I really thought they would have had worms by now, but, all come back negative :bear

I use Panacure it takes care of all kinds of parasites. I use it for goats and llamas and dogs and cats. I only worm the bears once a year in the fall right when Im packing the weight back on them for winter. Bears get most thier parasites/worms from eating grass and grooming. I know they dont get wormed in the wild but I like my bears too be nice and fat over winter. I dont test them I just worm them it wont hurt a thing, its just prevention.

There are wild brown bears in Greece, so I would assume that Malta is okay, as far as the climate is concerned.

Other rescues

Postby Noahlady1 » Sun Apr 04, 2010 9:19 pm

PAT, You asked me in previous reply what other rescues we have. Well, we have a male silver marbled fox. The people were going to kill him to make some woman a fur collar. We have emus, potbelly pigs (2) - they do tricks and I take them to school, etc. sometimes, 11 african pygmy goats, Llamas, miniature donkeys, a 4 ft. iguana, a young sulcatta tortoise, blue indigo peacocks and pure white peacocks, royal palm turkeys, dogs, cats, an Umbrella Cockatoo, a Moluccan Cockatoo, a Blue/Gold Macaw, a DBL. Yellow head Amazon, several kinds of chickens, a Rosey Australian Keet, a horse and 2 African Pygmy Hedgehogs. They keep us very busy but we love it.
