Gryphon, a blue naped mousebird

Postby keepsmiling » Sat Apr 27, 2013 7:24 am

I thought some of you might be interested to meet Gryphon. He is a Blue Naped Mousebird, they originated in South Africa. They are a very unusual bird, and like many softbills, must have a diet low in iron. He has very large feet, which he uses to hang vertically. This is even how he sleeps. One unusual trait is their ability to go into torper, something usually seen in reptiles and amphibians. They have a long stiff tail, short wings with which they are quite amazing fliers, and soft fur-like feathers. They are unchanged for eons, and considered a living fossil. Without further ado, this is Gryphon.

He is gorgeous. I've never seen that kind of bird before. He really does look like a Gryphon in a way! I love the bright blue on the back of his neck. What is his personality like; can you compare it to another bird species or is he unique in that way as well? He seems very tame.

Hello again, thanks so much. He reminded me very much of a gryphon, hence the name. I really can't compare him to any other bird, he is quite unique. He is extremely tame, and will fly right to me. He loves to fly to my head..lol.
I do have some videos I could post if you would like to see. One unusual thing they do is take sand baths.

So cute! I love the blue on him. I was about to ask where they originated, until I went back and re-read your first post, which answered my question.
