I just learned what an okapi was for the first time. I have to say it is a beautiful creature--probably my favorite hoofed animal yet.

Are these kept as pets/hoofstock in the exotic animal owner's community? Does anyone know if they're strong enough to ride?

I don't think they'd ever be tame enough to try and ride. Also, their giraffe-like shape would probably prohibit the placement of a saddle (they are closely related to giraffes). You'd probably slide right off its back. They're also not very big so I don't think they'd be able to carry the weight.

They are in the "near threatened" conservation status due to habitat destruction, so I don't know if they are part of the pet trade.
