How did the realities of your first pet/exotic compare to your expectations?

I was totally unprepared for the realities and wish I had not gotten that pet

Your expectations vs. the realities of your first exotic experience

How did the realities of your first exotic or first pet compare to your expectations? Was your pet more difficult than expected, much easier or approximately how you thought it would be?

I choose 2. I mean I got an anteater that was lovely from the start and soon slept in bed with me but the dealing with an import part, she arrived sick and not eating and felt in over my head but we pulled her through.

As for Ikigai the fennec. He's way more mellow than I was anticipating, but maybe that's a baby thing, we'll see if he stays that way.

I chose 2, because Corso. I had raised neonates before, it wasn't that. I wasn't prepared for the
eventuality of him growing away from me, and not needing me anymore. He's coming around,
and I'm so thankful, but that distance between us has hurt really bad.

I think for me, it is number 4. I expected Fable (red fox) to be a devil animal, lol. It made me prepare for the worse. I thought that he wouldn't stay sweet and mellow and that he would "wild up" at around 8 months, becoming untouchable and skittish. But he turned out to be a great fox and has stayed social and friendly with people. When you expect the worst, you typically get something better than you expected. :)

I'm also a fan of preparing for the worst - less surprises!

The only "exotic" I've had were rats but I chose option 4. I prepared the best I could and I had been reading up on care for years beforehand. All of my rats were good little critters, they never had tumors or any of the other horrors you read about them getting. The worst I had was when Johnny got myco, but some doxy cleared it right up and he took his medicine very willingly...he also had a very small rectal prolapse at one point but it went back in and never happened again. Luckily I had read about both of these things and knew what to do, for the most part :egeek:

my first exotic was sybil. after raising her all the other that followed was a breeze.
she was like a wild bear cub. I think the breeder pulled her from momma the day of the sale.

took me 6 months to get her to settle down. she bit, scratched when we first got her.
bottle feeding her was a nightmare. it was a two person job. had to have the 2nd bottle ready and do a quick switch.

benny was a dream. he was actually, pet quality.
