How to introduce a new baby emu?

Postby Emugurl » Wed Jul 17, 2013 7:54 am

Hi I am after some advice on introducing a new baby emu to two slightly older brother and sister. I live in the UK and we have two adult Emus and two young emus from the eggs of the adults, one male one female. Approx a few months old, yesterday we brought home a 9 week old baby emu that we found in a pet shop, she (we don’t actually know sex yet but she is called Eli) is a bit underweight and incredibly tame, behaves more like a pet dog than an emu, anyway we placed her in the pen with the other too last night and the other two emus seemed to not like her, chased her particularly the now much larger female and even looked to be trying to tread on Eli, we have now separated them for safety but they are next to each other now so can get used to each other but not harm, have anyone got any tips or advice or experience in this at all? Is there are right way to introduce them? My only thought at the moment is to wait until Eli is a bit bigger and healthier and settled in the pen and hope the chasing etc will only last few days?

the baby is too young to put with the two young ones.

at this age, the best you can do is keep them seperate.
if there is a way to to let them see each other until the baby gets a little older.
that would be the best solution for now.

after the baby is big enough, try to put one of the other young ones with the baby. (don't leave the older one long)
just try and start it out so it can get use to the baby. then try the other one with baby.
of course supervised.

overall, it is best to let them see each other without the 2 being able to bother the baby.

let us know how everything goes

I agree. For some reason Emus really have a problem with other emus of smaller size. You will have to keep them separated but preferably with a lots of line of sight to each other, for the time being.

Thanks for the replies, this is what we have done, they are in pens next to each other so will hopefully get familiar with each other that way and we will try and get when the baby is a lot bigger
