No emu eggs yet?

Postby Mechillemybell » Thu Dec 26, 2013 11:36 pm

We adopted a breeding pair of emus last fall, the female laid one egg the day She came here but not one since. The have mated ( I think ) but she has not laid any eggs yet this season, should I be worried? Is there something I should be looking into? Could it be a diet issue, cold or shelter issue? I think I have them in a pretty warm, dry barn stall at night and access to outside during the day...Fed twice a day :icon-frown:
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I live in Michigan, northern- lower peninsula.

not sure why she only laid one egg. when I had emus I don't even remember getting any eggs.
could they have laid the egg somewhere else and you didn't see it?

with the rheas, I put a bunch of straw and kind made a pile of straw in the corner of their house.
the female did lay eggs there, then the male sat on them. some hatched, but, didn't live long.
some eggs never hatched, but, when cracked, there was formed babies.

I have heard if you put a small log in the pile of straw, some might be more apt to lay the eggs

not sure if there is a food that helps. I will try and find out for you.

cutidead wrote up a care sheet for baby emus. he also posted a link on that post that has some useful info.
I put cutideads info in a sticky, the link he posted is: http://www.exoticpetvet.net/dvms/emus.html
