A friend of mine saw this bird in his yard. The bird seems to hang around.

bird

Hey. Yup, it's a juvenile red tail for sure. Probably around 1 year. I'm not totally sure if it's a male or female though. Looks possibly female though, as it closely resembles a hawk my friend works with at one year. Beautiful birds. :) I love watching them out hunting on the farm across the road from me.

Syburd

thanks for info..
how many different type of hawks are there?
just curious..

Hawks are beautiful.. I prefer them not flying over my property because of animals..
what type of and size of animal will a hawk take?

I get different stories..

Thanks,
pat

hawks

I'm not sure of exact numbers of types of hawks. Partly it'd depend on whether you looked at world wide, or just north america. Some of the more common north american hawks are: red tailed, red shouldered, marsh, zone tailed, harris, broad winged, ferringous, and rough legged.

As for size of prey, I think it's generally rabbit sized at the biggest. I can't think of any hawks off hand taking anything bigger.

BearsSpirit,

Yes, I also love the pictures and information.

I just wish the members would post more of their experience and picutures on raising animals..

yes a red tailed..
i cant tell how tall the bird is from the pic..
but the females are twice as large as the males.
seems like it would be the other way around.. but its not. :)
