Which type of Tortoise is the best for a beginner?

Postby Laughing Hyena » Sat Oct 06, 2012 4:39 pm

My minds been really bouncing around to which reptile to get, First I wanted an Iguana then went to Bearded Dragons now I'm looking at tortoises. I'm looking for a type of Tortoise that stays small and one you can keep in a tank in your house all day and you can take it out to roam your house whenever you want. Is there such a tortoise or do they all get huge and need an outdoor enclosure?

Also Greeks and Herman's stay relatively small red and yellow foots eventually need a table or hutch which are a lots f times cheaper than aquariums if u build them yourself.

Yes that types of tortoise you described (stays small & indoor housing) does in fact exist!

Actually there are several I know of that you may be interested in:
- Hermann’s Tortoise (Testudo hermanni)
- Russian Tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii)
- Greek Tortoise (Testudo graeca)

Take a look into those, all Testudo Genus, you can't go wrong with these types of tortoises.

I personally have 3 Russians (2 girls, one boy), also called a Horsefield, and absolutely adore them.

Feel free to ask any me questions

Take care,
Kelly

3 red fox, 4 pectinata iguanas, nile monitor, BW tegu, sailfin dragon, leachie gecko, 6 snakes, 2 salamanders, 3 tarantulas
