New Turtles, No Names

Postby minervasden » Sun May 10, 2015 7:48 pm

Two new turtles , Yellow-bellied came in on May second. I haven't posted about them before due to misplacing my camera (which is still missing). One male and one female who don't even have names. Impulse buy at a seaside souvenir shop.

I was bored and so was going to hold a naming competition, but I bet pictures would be desired. Sooo...
must find darn camera. Otherwise they will be George and Martha as that is the only submission

You can't just stop getting more turtles, haha. Congrats on the new little guys.

You should post pictures so we can suggest names based on their "personalities," lol. I'm glad that you got some new ones. That's always super exciting.

My camera is still missing  BUT I just remembered that I do have pictures. The former owners sent me pictures back in February as they didn't know the species. I all but forgot about those pictures.

Here is the male. Shell length/SCL* 5.5"

And this is the female. Shell length/SCL 8"

*SCL = Straight Carapace Length

@Ash- Turtles are one of the few critters I can (regarding landlord) take in. I can only house 4-6 though depending on size/species.

Cool. :) I will try to come up with some names. What are your other turtles named? Is there a them you have going with their names?

The other turtles are Franklin, Bob and Tuck. They all had names already when I got them so there is no rhyme or reason.
I believe any variation of Sheldon, Shelby, Shelly, etc. has been used by past turtles.

I'm not a big Twilight fan, but the names "Bella" and "Edward" could be super cute for two turtles, lol. Or "Sense" and "Sensibility" could be funny too, or "Pride" and "Prejudice." Just some thoughts, haha. Those seem more along the lines of something I would do if I got some turtles, lol.

Luv em! Glad you settled on some names. That can be so frustrating to come up with something, and that's usually why I probably always pick out names in advance, lol.

Last week I did a full scrub down of their outdoor tubs. New basking arrangements, new toys, aquatic plants arranged nicely, etc. Below is the reaction I received from Vega. Looks like she's saying " Did YOU do this? Did you mess up my house?"

Cute! She looks so indignant. I didn't realize you kept them in outdoor ponds. Do you have any pictures of your setup? Sounds cool to have them outside. How do you make sure they don't escape? Or do you just trust they'll stay in the water?

They aren't in real ponds. Just big rubbermaid and sterilite tubs with basking/haulout areas. I keep 'em in by making sure there is nothing high enough for them to climb over the top :icon-wink:

I don't have a yard I can give them a pond in icon-sad. I do let them have yard time a few times a week. Sometimes we host turtle races icon-smile.

Edit: They are outdoors for the season. Wasn't sure if that part was clear.
