Either with a siphon like doing an aquarium water change or if I want to scrub down the entire thing I pull the plug (literally).
The water drains into the flowers and plants around the porch. When the turtles are outside it is not really much work. I don't use substrate for slider turtles and that helps with cleanliness. Cleaning them when they are in for the winter is a bigger task.
I stay in the dark because too much light will blind you
