Any else heard of these and know if they're legal to have as pets and what they're like as pets? They're very interesting looking creatures. They kind of remind me of US version of an axolotl.
Various state/local populations and subspecies have protections or are under native wildlife regulations. Outside of that no blanket restrictions that I am aware of.
I remember there was a bait shop when I was young that would temporarily display 'oddballs' caught locally. I always checked for mudpuppies . I've never been so lucky to discover one in the wild.
As you can imagine, water quality is an important husbandry issue. Nocturnal, carnivorous, as much space as you can provide.
Edit: The term 'waterdog' can be used in reference of both mudpuppies and tiger salamander larvae so be sure to properly identify any waterdogs.
