Snow Day!

Postby BlueBaby1023 » Thu Feb 06, 2014 10:40 pm

Today most colleges out here were closed due to the massive storm passing through. Today we've topped out at around 10 inches and counting in the past 12 hours. For most of the Pacific Northwest, that's insane because that's usually more snow than we see in an entire year, especially in this part of the valley. But, I thought I'd share some photos; some are new, some are of the last snow that blew through and left 8 inches in December.

This is the last storm. We haven't gotten much here yet this time. (edit: like a week after the last storm due to the unusually cold temps it lasted awhile)

Where are you at TG? The last storm dumped mainly on OSU, I wasn't aware that it lasted anywhere but here and Albany. But it seems that Eugene is getting this storm pretty bad too, from what I've heard.

I'm in the foothills above Eugene. It was really unusual to stick that long and that deep. I guess it's all dumping on Eugene this time and not reaching us.

Ah, I don't know how accurate word of mouth is, but friends at UO were talking about the snow too. It stuck for over a week last time, I just hope it doesn't do that this time. I like snow to have a few days off of school, but past that it starts creating havoc.

My Aunt earlier in the day said they were getting a lot down there in Springfield. It's just raining here right now and it was even partly sunny today, but cold. Our little town is broke so aside from the highway through town nothing even got plowed last time. Lots of icy driving to go anywhere.

It's still snowing here... Last I heard we could get up to another 12 inches by tomorrow night. Eesh, that's bad, even for places that usually get a lot of winter snow. I think I'm hibernating until Monday with warm tea and plenty of furballs on my lap. :)

I don't think that Corvallis got plowed at all last time, to be frank. It created a mess because they cancelled our Monday finals and delayed Tuesday's, but the worst of the ice was on Thursday. I think Oregon as a whole needs more plows and sanders, but there just aren't too many days like these. And of course, ask students (especially ones from parts of this country or other countries that don't get much snow) to drive in it and everyone starts crashing.

I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania, this "storm" is nothing for us :P We have nine months of winter here. The other 3 are road construction, haha

I think we got about 9 inches, but I didn't go out and measure it.

It was actually worse a few weeks ago when there was barely any snow on the ground. It was -10 degrees for two nights in a row one week. My dad and I had to go in the basement in the middle of the night that night and thaw out our water pipes because we didn't realize just how cold it was until our water stopped coming up and we looked at the outside temp gauge.

That sounds like so much fun. Except, not. I am not a person who likes the cold. But, like I said, this much snow west of the Cascades is virtually unheard of. I know we broke some records, just don't know what they are.

Plus, most people here don't know how to drive in snow or ice.. When I have to go out in this, I feel like this :wall: every time I see someone with a truck that isn't weighted in the back, or someone who hits the gas while turning, or... yknow, just about anything you'd do normally.

Times like these, I love my 4WD SUV with snow tires. Vroom vroom. :)

In Utah, it can't decide whether it wants to be spring or winter, lol. It'll snow like crazy one day, and then the next be almost melted. Temperature fluctuates all over the place. Sometimes you can go out without a coat, other days you're freezing regardless of how many layers you put on.

That sounds pretty crazy. Where I am at right now is up to about 15-16 inches so far.. :/ I just measured right off my porch at a low point and it was 13 inches. They announced on national news that this is the first time in recorded history that snow has shut down Portland.

I wish we only had an inch, TG! I'll try and post some more pictures from today so you guys can see the difference. It's miserable sitting in my apartment all day.. But I'm not risking going out, there was a 20 car pileup near Albany yesterday on I5.

From today:
Not the best area to measure at, it's right off my porch and kinda protected via the building, but gives you an idea (yes, that's at 14 inches, in the same spot as yesterday afternoon at 8.5 inches).

Image

Same cars as from yesterday. The fence is about 4ft, and it's buried up to the bottom rung today (which is about 12 inches from the ground and about 6-8inches per rung.
Image

For reference, my dog is 50lbs and about 23 inches at the shoulder, and she was well past her belly in some areas.
