Our Muntjac Deer Athena

Postby egroegart » Tue Feb 28, 2012 6:37 pm

This is our Muntjac Deer Athena. She is wonderful. Very sweet and she loves to be up on the couch with us. Or with any of our other animals. Muntjacs are the oldest living species of deer dating back 35 million years. They only reach weights of around 25 pounds. So they are quite small. They use a litterbox, which she is doing great, but they also go to the bathroom in their crate. We started out using straw in her crate but the absorbancy wasn't the greatest and it smelled the whole house up, so we switched to pine shavings and now it smells like Christmass all year round. lol. Muntjacs are big chewers and will eat or chew anything. So they need to be monitored at all times when in the house. Athena is loose out of her crate at all times we are home, but we keep a good eye on her. She also has access to the outdoor enclosure at all times and goes in and out all day with our bobcat Benji. Muntjacs are easy to care for. They eat grain, and drink water. They also have to have dirt and hay at all times to eat. Yes dirt. She eats a lot of dirt. There are minerals that they need in dirt. She also has a salt lick which she loves. She loves to be vacuumed so I'll post the video here. http://youtu.be/i70lSGTfjaY
and she loves cereal

Thank you guys. She is adorable. So far so good with her and Benji cohabitating well together. We do keep an eye on them, but he is good with her. He does get a little rough sometimes but she fights right back and bucks him. He usually lays off then. She although is much more destructive than Benji is. When we are sleeping or if we leave she goes in her crate or outside into the enclosure. She chews everything.

Thank you Ciaobella. It is great to see them interact the way they do together every day.

Here's a little video of her tonight. She loves the cardboard boxes too. She doesn't destroy them like Benji does, but she does like to play.

Thank you. Muntjacs are easy to care for and she rarely has an accident in the house. They are very hardy animals also. She doesn't seem to learn from being corrected where Benji knows when he is doing something wrong and seems to have a much higher intelligence as it only takes a few times of correcting him for him to learn to stop something. Muntjacs will chew everything and continue to do it even though she has been corrected a million times. And she is so fast. Cushions, blankets and clothes are full of holes in an instant. But we watch her close. It is really sweet to see her grooming Benji. She does it all the time and he grooms her too. But every time she is grooming him by the time I get the camera out she stops. lol. Isn't that how it always is?

I love the vids. I'll probably try and show one of them in a meeting for my pro-exotic club since they give an awesome look at how different species raised together can get along

Just a couple more vids. The first one is Athena playing with cardboard boxes and the second is her with our boxer, Buster. He is very patient with her.
