I purchased a short tailed opossum about a month ago and I am having some difficulties getting him to calm down. He came from a pet store (a pretty nice one with good reviews) and should be about five months old now. He's healthy and eats well. He loves to run on his wheel and is adorable but skittish.
I have him in a large, multi-tiered cage, which might be part of the problem, since there are plenty of places for him to hide when I go to try interacting with him.
I've been taking him out every day and let him run around on me (I sit in the bath tub so he can't escape) but I simply can't pick him up or even touch him, really. The only way to get him out of his cage is while he's in one of his nests...I feel bad for disturbing him but there isn't really any other way to move him without him panicking and trying to chomp on me, which has happened a few times.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
