We got a fish tank!

Postby Elina » Tue Aug 26, 2014 6:57 am

8 years ago Griff and I had a tropical fish tank. Well after a year or so one night we forgot to lock the door to my study and Audrey got in (age 3) and poured all the various chemicals into the tank resulting in everything dying. It was horrid as we had our tank at that point where it was prefect with regards to the inhabitants. They all coexisted and no one ate anyone else which was quite a feat as I had 2 fire bellied newts in there.

On Sunday Griff decided he wanted to get another tank. Audrey is 10 now and she will be going to boarding school in September (not that I thought she would do anything to harm the fish). Audrey wanted to get a fish tank for some time so I agreed. SO on Sunday we got a 90L (23US Gal.) Fluval tank. It came with a filter, heater, thermostat and lights. We also got a H2Show bubble maker. Audrey chose sand for the floor of the tank.

We have ordered a variety of plants, a few of which have already arrived so those have been planted.

I remember I went for black gravel previously and I think it was as sand starts to look dirty quickly. . . . Is that the case? If so I will change it over before it's time to add the fish.

We opted for live plants just because I like gardening lol. New hobby I just started this summer.

While we wait for the tank to settle I got a robo fish for Audrey and Griff so they stop looking mad staring at an empty tank lol. Darn thing keeps getting stuck behind the filter.

Oh and can you have too many bubbles in your tank?
Currently it looks like I have a tank filled with Sprite or 7up in my study. . .

I took a photo just now. Our wood and most plants have not yet arrived but should do this week.

So I decided to change to black gravel before it was too late. It was a total pain in the butt removing the water and sand but we did it and it meant we could add a layer of plant fertiliser.
All the plants are real so we don't hurt anyone's fins. The big thing in the middle we got off eBay and is a log with moss that was pre soaked. Crappy thing is it seems to be covered in hundreds of snails! They are taking over!
I think it looks pretty nice though.

Oh no. We had a snail infestation before too. Only way to stop it was starting the whole tank over. Though our really big pleco would eat some of them.

I saw this snail killing stuff for in the tank but that will kill any other vertebrates. . . Not great if you have a FISH tank lol.
Someone told me to get an assassin snail to kill them (yep, that's the name of an actual type of snail lol) but then I just worry if I will be over run with those  .
