My fish!

Postby Juska » Wed Jul 25, 2012 12:19 am

Gonna try to not make this too image heavy, lol. Since starting as a Pet Care Specialist at PetSmart, I've become quite enamored with aquariums and fish! I currently have 3 setups, which I will post pictures of along with a little blurb of info about each one.

Midas:
Midas is a red and white Ryukin goldfish. He currently is about 3 inches long, but he started out at a little over an inch. I've had him since March of this year, and is the first fish I've had since my Oranda died back in 2008. The first photo is his current setup, a 3 gallon crescent acrylic tank. The second photo is a hi-res closeup of him when he was little.

The 20 gallon:
I bought this tank in June, so I've only had it running about a month now. Currently, I have 5 Flame Tail Endler's Livebearers, 4 Silvertip Tetras, 2 Dwarf Gouramis (one regular and one Flame), and one Endler's Cobra Guppy.

The first photo is of the tank, second is one of the Dwarf Gouramis, third left are two of the Silvertips, and third right is one of the Endler's Livebearers.

My third setup is a 1/2 gallon long acrylic tank, with a single male Halfmoon Betta. He's dark blue with stark white fins. As of right now I don't have any photos of him, as I just got him a few days ago and he is still pretty shy. I don't want to spook him with the camera right now, but I'll try to get a photo up as soon as I can! He's beautiful and I've never seen one with his coloring before. I have also yet to find a suitable name for him, so any name suggestions would be appreciated :)

Awesome tanks!!!! Are you going to put real plants in your 20 gallon tank?
I love the colours of the round tank. Cant wait to see your half moon. I'd call him Fin (not because of a fish fin, but for the finnish flag colour)

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Finnish flag! Maybe I'll name him after a city in Finland. I love that country and I wish I could visit there someday :D I don't really like the look of live plants, and keeping them is kind of a pain. So I'll probably stick to the fake ones for now

Since taking a picture of Midas' tank (the goldfish), I've added a background cling so it's not so bare looking, lol. Here's a new photo I just took:

And for anyone who's worried about him being in a smaller tank, don't worry. He has a powerful filter and I change the water regularly, and he's quite healthy. He eats twice a day, the little piggy! I may also move him into a bigger tank if I can save up some money, but since the stand he's on is on the small side I won't be able to put him in something that's long, and the column aquariums are usually pretty expensive.

Here's a photo of my two Gouramis meeting for the first time last night (the new one is in the bag and the other is outside looking in curiously, lol)

This is Niko this morning. I named my Gouramis Niko and Roman after Niko and Roman Bellic from the video game Grand Theft Auto 4. They have pretty much the name relationship, usually fine but they get into fights once in a while if they get in each other's way, haha.

And last but not least, my new Endler's Cobra guppy I got along with Niko last night.

Thank you! I'm very proud of my 20 gallon, it's the biggest tank I've ever personally gotten up and running successfully :)

Niko and Roman seem to be getting along a little better now. Roman still chases Niko when they get too close to each other, though I haven't noticed any nipped fins or other wounds.

I like the colour of the snail shell. A nice bright fighter would look stunning in that tank. Talking about fighters, when do we get treated by a picture of the halfmoon??

Unfortunately, my black cobra guppy died two days ago. My nitrites are spiking again and I have no clue why. My well water is almost perfect for fish, and I've been doing water changes like crazy to try and bring it down. I'm thinking either my parents have been sneaking them food, and therefore overfeeding them, or perhaps the addition of the two fish has made it rise, but what doesn't make sense is that the parameters were perfect before and now the nitrite is around 5 or 6, which is crazy high. Haven't lost anyone else, they all seem hungry and active like usual. Keep your fingers crossed that my levels go down!

Also, here's my betta :) Still haven't decided on a name, but it will probably be something Finnish because of his colors, like you mentioned BB :D

oh wow, he is so pretty. you are right, the colouring is unusual!
Did you cycle the tank first before you put the fish in it? Sometimes gravel ornaments or plants can change some readings as well. I'm also not a big fan of Carbon elements in the filter. It can cause problems as well...(not quite sure if you have a carbon filter...)
For some reason I always had problems keeping guppies in my tanks. They are doing fine in the ponds outside though.

Nope, my tank was well cycled before putting these new guys in. Didn't have any problems putting in my Silvertips, the first Gourami or the little Livebearers. I do have a carbon filter, because that's the one that came with the tank. I even tried putting my first filter cartridge back into the filter, just in case there needed to be more bacteria or something, but that didn't help. I'm also officially out of test strips, so when I go to work today I'll have to borrow some from the store use bottle (we test people's water for free there, and I don't have $13 to spend on another bottle of my own just yet). I used my last test strip to test the water I was changing with, and everything checked out great. Nitrites and Nitrates 0, Chlorine 0 (well water), Soft, slightly acidic pH. Pretty much perfect for the kinds of fish I have.

It's weird that the bigger adult Guppy died and my 5 baby Livebearers are alive and kicking.

hmm, maybe it was just the guppy...?? If all the others are alright and you keep the waterchanges up it was just something out of your control I guess.

I just fed all my tanks, and everyone in the 20 gallon were quite eager and ravenous this morning! They got some freeze-dried bloodworms and regular tropical flakes. I'm very precise about feeding, I have a small hole in the foil cover on the bloodworms and I gently tap it to only let a few pieces fall out at a time so they all get eaten. Everyone seems happy and active, and I haven't lost anyone else yet. My Ammonia tested low/safe, but the nitrites are still in the danger zone at 5-6 just now when I tested it. I did win two bottles of API Quick Start at the meeting this morning at work, which is what I used initially when setting the tank up, so maybe that will get it back in shape. Seachem's Prime just isn't doing anything to get the nitrites down, and that's the one most people swear by. If it doesn't clear up soon, I'm going to the store to get a bottle of ATM Colony supplement. That helped when I was getting my cycle going when setting up as well, and there was a nitrite/ammonia spike.

I can't seem to find the "edit" button, so sorry for double posting.

My nitrites are finally starting to drop! Thank goodness. Everyone still seems happy and healthy as well.

The beta is so pretty! I have never seen one that looked like that before either. Your setups look amazing. I find fish-keeping really intimidating, so I commend you on your success!
