Losing baby teeth?

Postby suki'smom » Tue Feb 10, 2009 10:43 am

Today I went out to feed my horse and in his hay bin was a tooth. He will be four in June and I just thought that he's a little old to be losing baby teeth. Is this normal or should I call my vet?

This is completely normal for a four year old!! They can loose teeth up to five years. They'e the flat teeth up front. Sometimes an equine dentist has to pull them if they don't come out naturally. This is the age that they can also get "wolf teeth" - teeny hooked teeth towards the back of their mouths. When Cheeky was four, the dentist had to pull her's out. Not a big deal at all - it was done with her regular teeth floating.

Mariah - what kind of horse do you have??

Thanks for the info I was really starting to worry. Rusty is a pure bred mutt. He is a quarter POA and three quarters Quarter Horse. He was an accident (his dad was half and half and was only six months old when he bred my uncle's Quarter Horse and Arabian mares resulting in two unexpected colts come spring) I've had him since he was 8 months old and I trained him myself.

Yeah for mutts!! Cheeky's mom is half quarter horse/ half Arab and her dad is a purebred Paso Fino. I love her to pieces. Most of the time those mutts are the best you can have!! :D
