Denmark Exotic Animals Law

Postby BlueBaby1023 » Sat May 02, 2015 2:49 pm

I helped someone look up Denmark's exotic laws, so I thought I'd post it here just for reference if someone wants the information. It appears that some exotic mammals are banned, but Fennec and Red foxes are legal. Here is the listings of animals banned and those exempted. The link is in Danish, but Google does a pretty good job of translating into English.

Wow they got more restrictive. They used to allow most everything but then there was an issue with one of the major exotic brokers so I guess it''s expected. One issue gotta make the law more restrictive even though it was one isolated incident.

I had no idea that this was more restrictive. I guess that should have been expected, this law was updated last June. It was hard enough to find this law, let alone previous versions of it. Searching in Danish using Google Translate as a mediator was pretty fun though.

I find several things about this list amusing.

  1. All flying squirrels are banned. The southern flying squirrel is one of the handful of legal mammals in Massachusetts, whereas Denmark allows a large number of mammals our "illegal unless enough people demand otherwise" strategy forbids.
  2. Marmosets are legal. In the US, exotic bans generally go for a blanket ban on "nonhuman primates," which the Danes at least don't do. On the other hand, even marmosets are harder to keep properly in captivity than flying squirrels.
  3. On the short list of carnivores, the whole mongoose family is acceptable for some reason.
  4. Infamously bite-happy coatis are legal, but not kinkajous, raccoons, or ringtails and cacomistles.
  5. In banning "insectivores," they exempted the only two groups which people actually keep. It's not apparent why shrews, moles, or moonrats would be a problem, but the Danes clearly see trouble in the making.
  6. They specifically ban several animals which AFAIK aren't even kept as pets, such as colugos, anomalures, and pangolins. Presumably they're trying to get a jump on future popular pets. They also banned some species such as platypodes, koalas and manatees which would be impossible to obtain as pets.

Woah, this really makes Sweden seem lenient. And yes, MANY animals that seem so pointless to ban. (In Sweden it's technically legal to own dolphins and whales, but I guess there's no point in banning them since no private individual would ever get their hands on one.)
My main interest is in parrots, dogs, toothed whales and snakes.
Future animals I want to have when we have land are camels, wolfdogs/wolves, coyotes or jackals, striped hyena or aardwolf. Also poultry, rabbits water buffalo and/or yak for livestock.
