Anteater vocolizations

Postby TamanduaGirl » Tue Jul 23, 2013 10:21 pm

Anteater vocalizations take some learning. They mostly communicate through various hisses through their nose. There are crying and weeping hisses, cranky hisses, Long strong hisses, shrill and whistle hisses. A good long loud hiss works good a no. Something that sounds like a hiss, like dragging a box across the floor is likely to startle them. Aurora sometimes makes softer play hisses while playing.

Soft puffs through the nose are contented and happy like when I'm snuggling with Pua. They grunt and make little whines when being poked by each other. Soft clicking is a loving noise but I only ever heard it when Pua was very young and laying on my chest because it's so soft but I still click at her and she loves that.

One time Aurora got so happy while playing with Pua she started beeping and ran a circle around the room than stopped once she got back to Pua but she only ever did it the once.

They also growl but it is not like a canine growl it sounds something like a little dinosaur growl. Aurora is a very vocal anteater she walks around muttering like an old lady complaining about life hissing and growing but not seriously so most of the time. She has mellowed a lot recently though and mostly tells off the dogs if they bug her when walking around.

Babies are more vocal and can chirp and warble and squawk. Sometimes Momma Aurora would do it at her baby to but adults otherwise normally don't vocalize in that way. One time when her baby got to close to me Aurora let out a sort of warble scream like warning her baby about me but Ori of course ignored her.

Pua giving a crying/weeping hiss and Stewie was halfheartedly giving an aggressive hiss like he was going to defend her but wasn't really sure(Pua had just gotten over her illness so was scarred up)

Aurora makes some play hisses in this and Ori is complaining about their playing.

While I doesn't sound much different this is Aurora voicing her frustration

New born baby crying and chirping(the whining in the background was my dog who wanted to help)

If you ignore me and the morning mess(they track their food all over) there is quite a bit of anteater talking in this one

Here Pua gives aggressive whistles

Aurora grumpy muttering

There's some real growling in this one around 13 is the loudest but I needed my sound up more on this one than the others

I took time and watched all of the videos today and read your descriptions. That's super interesting. It seems really hard to learn "anteater." Did it take awhile for you to understand Pua's sounds and body language?

I still love the one with Aurora trying to go into the washer with Pua, lol. It's me and my sister's favorite because Aurora just looks so stunned and taken aback when the washer closes.

I forgot you asked a question. Yeah, it's very subtle and not like regular dog and cat talk so took some time to learn.

In nonverbal communication I've told the story before but when bringing her home from the airport I offered her some jam on my finger. She took my finger and held it and sniffed it and then started poking at it with her claw slowly getting harder and harder till I got concerned and pulled away thinking she might be trying to open my finger up to get more jam, lol. Turns out it's like a greeting. They just do that to friends and family. They poke at each others hands and feet when playing or settling in.

The other day Aurora was chirping in her sleep. I wasn't sue what the heck it was at fist but tracked the sound to her in the closet. Who knows what she was dreaming about.
