Aurora went to poop so I got to handle him a bit. He was shy as I hadn't handled him other than some pets while on mom since I put the new bed up. It's harder to sneak into it while mom is eating than the other set ups. I did measure him last night while on mom but was still surprised to see how big he looked in there all by himself. He's 6" from shoulder to tail base and the head probably adds another 3 inches. Didn't measure the tail length. Camera battery died so I didn't get any shots of him in there by himself.

How long do you think it will it be until Cinco's fully weaned and ready to be handled a lot?

They wean somewhere between 6 months to a year depending on mom. Around 8 months average. 6 months is not common on their own and I think is mostly when mom gets pregnant again. They start cycling again 3 months after birth. Around 3 months they will start sampling food.

I want to start handling him more once he's a month but I'll still be cautious as I don't want to make mom's paranoia worse. I may not ever win her trust though and need to raise baby to be tame. I'll be more confident when he gets more active.

Hi TamanduaGirl,

I love seeing the picture's of Aura's baby growing up. That video of the baby nursing was amazing to see as well. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us.

I like Pat and many others hope the baby is a male. But if not you still have yourself a baby girl Image. Plus you could keep her and make a breeding group  .

Lastly I agree with your intentions on when/how to handle the baby more. I know nothing about breeding Tamandua but I know a lot about breeding/raising other exotics.

Please keep the picture's and video's coming Image !

Well under the boy bit is pointy and the girls rounded/mound. Still each boy is different like Stewie's was like a pyramid kinda while Eldorado was like half a banana shape and bigger. Not seen real tinny baby bits before this so I haven't been sure and haven't bothered checking lately. I plan to try Sunday.

As I said on FB I love those little ears!

Audrey is learning about the rainforest at school and wondered if Tamandua's ever live in the rainforest as she likes them much more then sloths which she has been given to write about. Her teacher said she can choose a different animal if she wants but has to be from the rainforest, the teacher had no idea what a 'Pua' that 'Mummy's friend has' is lol.

Yes they live all over South America including the rainforests.

I like the way baby ears tend to flop.

I thought they did but wanted to check as all the photos on the net not taken by you have them looking really pissed off in fields and where it is written where they live it just says central and south America but there is more to both places then just the rainforest.
Yay Audrey can write about Pua (if thats okay with you?).

I don't mind. They live all over but are very hard to spot when in the forest so more photos of those out in fields.

This is a great documentary on them if you can find the whole thing http://science.discovery.com/videos/wei ... aters.html
It covers the ants and pygmy anteaters a bit too but it's really good. It discusses the ant species tasting like blue cheese and documentation of them eating fruit in the wild for the first time.

How's the baby lately? I love hearing updates. And that last picture you took of him is adorable, by the way!

Aurora was taking a break away from him and he seemed grateful for the company.
