Re: Canid Minimum Guidelines
These are really helpful, thanks for posting them on all the forums! I think they'll help our new users especially, since they usually have so many questions on care and biology.

Re: Canid Minimum Guidelines
Thanks. It's helpful, but why do they include domestic dogs as one of the species in the large canine care sheet? Do they really expect you to have an actual enclosure for a domestic dog if you have one at your zoo?
For a domestic dog, what's wrong with just a backyard type setting?

this discussion, medium or large canids are defined as any
species of canid belonging to the genus Canis, including the side-striped jackal, Canis
adustus; golden jackal, C. aureus; black-backed jackal, C. mesomelas; Simian jackal, C.
simensis; coyote, C. latrans; red wolf, C. rufus; dingo, C. familiaris dingo; gray or timber
wolf, C. lupus; domestic dog, C. familiaris (and timber wolf x dog hybrids); as well as the
dhole, Cuon alpinus; maned wolf, Chrysocyon brachyurus; and African wild dog, Lycaon
pictus.

Re: Canid Minimum Guidelines
It appears to be due to the hybrid situation. If you are breeding wolf hybrids the dogs would need to be part of the pack so not kept as a house pet.
Re: Canid Minimum Guidelines
I know this sounds odd but this will be helpful to keep printed out in case anyone complains about anyone's pet fox in the enclosure in their garden so you can show whoever comes to look at it. I am pretty sure everyone with a fox has something bigger then 6.5ft x 6.5ft.
Thanks for linking these, really nice to read.
It's proof my foxes live in the lap of luxury hehe.

Lap of luxury is right! Fable's living space is almost the size of the one meant for a family of foxes. What's funny, is I always think it should be bigger!

Re: Canid Minimum Guidelines
Was thinking myself that they all sounded to small, for a lg. candid 10x15ft? Thats way to small. Selene and Loki's is roughly 50x40 and I was thinking that that was abit small and wished I had gone bigger.

Re: Canid Minimum Guidelines
Well it does say minimum. Is a fox going to go mental and start mutilating it's self or something in a 6.5x6.5, probably not, so is considered the smallest acceptable by AZA, but for sure it's not ideal.
Re: CANID Minimum GUIDELINES
O my that is very small...Wisconsin requires an enclosure of a minimum of 120 square feet and 6 feet high for one or two animals. The above guidlines are only 42.25 square feet and 5 feet high....
