Long Haired/Rough Coat Doberman?

Postby Alynn » Mon Sep 15, 2014 5:44 pm

I came across this picture and similar pictures of what are supposed to be long haired dobermans. Everything I can find suggests that long haired dobermans are either the result of a recessive long hair gene popping up in litters with parents that carry it (and supposedly will only show up in red/rust dobermans?), or someone being untruthful about the ancestry of the dog, like including saluki or another long hair in the ancestry but claiming it be pure doberman.

Anybody know if it's possible to find a reputable breeder for a long haired doberman?

The thing is I really adore that look. I /love/ the look of long haired weimaraners which seem to be a lot less sketchy on the breeding side, but I don't think I could handle the prey drive that they have. Unless there's lines that have less of a prey drive?

If there's no good breeder for them (which is what I'm guessing since it's outside breed standard), is there any breeds that might have a similar look? Someone suggested a Gordon Setter to me but really the gordon setters definitely look like a setter. Tighter jowls and that soft semi-long haired look is what I'm thinking of.

I have never seen a Dobie like that, and I have seen quite a few of them before as my mother used to breed them. I doubt anyone breeds for it, it would definitely be a fault. (Not that breeding for the runtiest dogs ever in toy breeds isn't a fault, I just suspect that people are less interested in a long haired Doberman than in a 1lb Chihuahua. )

I looked for breeders but couldn't find any. The only thing google tells me is that people have wayyyyy too much time on their hands, because this was in the second row of pictures... http://www.freakingnews.com/pictures/93500/Doberman-Goat--93848.jpg

As far as other breeds, have you checked out the Flat Coated Retriever? They are pretty similar looking to coated Weimaraners, but they don't tend to have as high of a prey drive if trained right from a young age. The ones that I have met have all been mild mannered and beautiful.

Never heard of that before. Looks like a mix to me.

that's surely not a pure doberman - i've seen a lot and know people that breed them too and that i've never seen before.

someone have crossed them and the saluki that was mentioned above is a really good shout cos of the ears - doberman ears have short fur all over.
no point blaming the dog cos you tukd up ;)
