Brandy passed away today.

Postby pat » Mon Apr 06, 2015 8:20 pm

I am so very sadden by Brandy's passing.

She was fine and full of energy yesterday, this morning she couldn't walk, eat, drink.
I took her to the vet thinking she may have bloat.

but, when the vet did a sonogram, I was in shock. she had a large cancerous tumor in her stomach that burst.
her gums were pale, her blood pressure was low.

The vet suggested putting her down. the only other option would have been
to remove her spleen assuming the cancer didn't spread. she felt the cancer already spread.
but, with her vital signs, I doubt she would have made it through the surgery

I am just so upset and have been crying all day. no warning of this. it was a total shock to me.
I miss her so very much and loved her so much.

Oh, Pat. I can't believe it.. what a horrible shockingly loss. What a sweet, smart girl she was, and what an
exciting, interesting time she had with you, and what a great momma you are. I am so sorry.

 I'm so sorry, Pat... It's so hard to lose an animal, and the fact that it just kind of came out of the blue and was so unexpected makes it much worse. There was no way you could have known, and I don't think anything would have helped at that point... I believe you did what was best for her--but I know it's never easy losing a pet.

When I put Scarborough Fair down, I was a wreck...

I am certain Brandy is in a good place, watching over you. I've had that feeling since Scarborough Fair died--like I feel her spirit just resting beside me or something, curled up behind my neck. It brings me comfort, and I'm sure you'll still feel her presence.

I sincerely believe animals live on after death and that we will be reunited with them when we pass away. So know that she will always be with you. *hugs*

thank you everyone for your support. It really means a lot to me.

when the vet brought Brandy back in the room with the port in her leg. she was brought in on a gurney.
vet had a hard time finding a vein to insert the needle. I hugged Brandy the whole time and even while they started the injection.
hugged her till the end. the vet checked her heart at told me it stopped. but, what really added to my stress
is when Brandy was coughing. The vet said sometimes that happens even though her heart stopped.
That just made me that much more upset. I never experienced that before.

I cry everyday. my other two dogs are even depressed. both will stay on the couch a lot where Brandy use to sleep.

I just don't understand how I didn't know she had cancer. the vet said it is the type of cancer that spread very quickly.
(can't remember the name of it). I am just so confused why there were no signs at all

thank you again for supporting me and understanding..

So sorry for your loss Pat! icon-sad

It sounds like hemangiosarcoma, which would affect her spleen and cause the paleness and low BP that you mentioned. Unfortunately, it is really common in large dogs and on top of it spreading really quickly, there often aren't any signs because it affects the lining of the blood vessels, so it isn't something you can outwardly see like some other tumors.

I know you loved her deeply and that you made the right decision. Sending warm fuzzies and hugs your way.

BlueBaby1023,

thank you for your support.

I am pretty sure the vet said hemangiosarcoma, sounds familiar. (couldn't remember what she told me) thank you for the info.
all the dogs I raised in the past, this is the first one that had this type of cancer.

Does this type of cancer happen often? also, is there a way for a dog to be tested for it when it first starts? and if so, is there anything that can be done to stop it from spreading?

I hope I never have to experience that again.

thank you again for your support and info...

Unfortunately, yea, it is pretty common. icon-sad Mostly in purebreds, particularly high in Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Rotties, etc.

The only test that would show a possible hemangiosarcoma would be bloodwork regularly, but even then it may be hard to catch if you aren't looking for it because the symptoms in bloodwork that it causes can be caused by a bunch of different things. The most common bloodwork result is anemia, and that has a million causes. The only definitive test is biopsy of the tumor, but you would have to know it's there. icon-sad

Once it starts, the only thing to be done is chemo and radiation, along with tumor removal. Most dogs develop a tumor either in the heart itself or the spleen, so the latter is the "better" location. Unfortunately, because blood is almost everywhere in our bodies, it spreads fast because the tumors affect the lining of the blood vessels. Essentially, they are growing attached to the superhighway within us, allowing cancerous cells to bud off and travel quickly to every region of our bodies. That's why it's such a bad cancer, and, sadly, even with tumor removal and chemo or radiation, the average survival time from diagnosis to death is only 6 months.

Really, there isn't much to be done about it, unfortunately... Chemo and surgery may buy some time, but not much time in the scheme of things. Sometimes it's just more peaceful to let them go. icon-sad

I really don't know what to say but I know how much pain you are feeling. I know you know this but at the same time you will not believe me but it does get better with time. *hugs*

BlueBaby1023,

thank you for the info. Brandy use to get blood work done about every 3 months for her thyroid. but, the last blood work was 6 months ago,
and was only tested for her thyroid level. in fact, the day she died, I was planning on calling the vet to get another blood work test done.
she did have a full panel blood work, but, that was about 9 months ago. so, the tumor really was fast acting icon-sad
I think her passing was better than putting her through chemo treatments. (I could not have afforded it anyway)

thanks again.
(sorry for the long delay, I been so very busy, took my mind off brandy for awhile)

thank you elina. your right, each day is getting better. being so busy helped keep my mind off her.
each day, I am adjusting to the idea she is gone.

the other day, I was at the store, and went to pick up 3 bones for my dogs. then I remembered about brandy.
only had to had to get 2.

my two dogs are staring to adjust a little better about the loss of brandy. I know they still miss her though.

even darryl (my fox) was yellling out for her, just like he did when larry died. strange how smart and even sensitive animals are.

I got brandy's paw print. the vet does this for dogs that die. (at not charge)
they even give me the "rainbow bridge" poem enclosed. I think it is a nice gesture.
I have a collection of my deceased animals hanging on the wall.

I attached a picture of Brandy's paw print. (you can click the picture to enlarge it)
