TG,

I don't expect him to do anything low cost (which he don't)
but, it is the way he went about it. it was not my fault he couldn't
get benny sedated. if he would have properly sedated him, the time should not have
been that long. as I said, gary (hubby) did some of the injections.
he should have had the proper stuff to sedate benny, and I don't think he did.

I guess I will just chalk it up, will have to pay him in payments icon_confused.gif

the needle you have a link to is the needle he used. but, I have to wonder about
the rest of the charges. $120.00 for professional services.

the 1st visit he did when he looked at benny cost me 65.00. only to look at him thru the fence.
(he was already on a farm call nearby). I accepted that. but, this 2nd one really put me over the edge.

It's not high really. It's like $45 to see my vet in her office. It of course will cost more for house calls. So at $65 an hour that's $45 for regular time plus 20 due to out of office special time. 2hrs at that rate would be $130. Really $120 for a 2hr home visit is reasonable or about average going rate. But like I said ideally he should have given some discount for his not knowing what he was doing but if you don't have other options fighting over it could be worse than having to pay it.

TG,

good point. just upsets me for what he put benny through. it was horrible.
he use to work at a zoo, I really thought he would have known what to do with a bear.
on another note, he is good with all my other animals.

thank you again for your help with this.

I'm sorry. He doesn't even look that old. I guess 13 is getting up there for a bear but he doesn't look it.

he can't hold any food down.
he tries, but, throws it up, even water he drinks he throws up.
lots of foam from his mouth yesterday

benny is 13 this year. captive bears average live to be 18-25.
benny's dad, died a few years ago at the age of 18. maybe it is something genetic.

I feel so darn bad for him. it's hard to see him this way.

Could be the tumor is so big it's pressing on his stomach or intestines, though as already said could be any number of things you would need to test for. I tend to think it's the tumor, even though technically benign, if it's big enough to cause a blockage that would be the type of symptoms you would see. Though I've seen similar issues with pancreatitis(not likely here) and kidney infection/issues. I lean towards the tumor just getting too big.

Really sorry you and he are going through this *hugs*

TG,

makes sense about the tumor. according to the vet, it don't need to be removed
he probably didn't want to do it. I would hate to see the cost of that. before, he told me the
only way he could remove it, is, if I bring him in the office. (which I understand)

he would not eat at all this morning. he was sitting up and outside. but, still looks pretty bad.
his eyes is what has me wondering. they are kind of "bugged eyes" with red around the eye balls.
I would think it might have something to do with some type of organ disease/cancer?

I hit a dead end, I have no idea what to do. I hate to put him down, with hope he would come around.
but, it is not looking too good. having a hard time with the antibotics, he is not eating, therefore, he is not getting them icon-sad (sybil is gaining weight, guess from eating his food)

I attached a couple pictures of benny's eyes. see what you think.
the 1st one is what they use to look like.

the 2nd two are what they looked liked a few weeks ago. (a little worse now) notice the red and the wide eyes.
usually bears have beady eyes (smaller than what benny's are now)
his eyes were like that shortly after he come out of hibernation. seems they got a little worse.

if the vet was able to put him under, he could have did blood work and checked him over more.
I am still upset what he charged me. if he did his job right, and researched what he was not sure of,
maybe I would have known.

The red in the eye is his third eyelid. It got swollen and stuck out of place. In dogs they call it cherry eye. I think in his case it could be from dehydration but no one really know why it happens.

I'm not sure of the size of them. I think it may be more how wide open they are than the eyes actually being swollen or bugging from pressure behind them. Also I think loosing weight could have some to do with it causing less tissue around the eye. But he could also be holing them wider open if in pain, maybe.

With him not eating. I really don't see much hope without surgery which I know is probably bout impossible right now. The main thing is if you think he's in pain but one of the things they tell owners to look for in pets who are terminal is when they stop eating. It's a really hard decision to make. I waited too long on Kat but she never stopped eating. Quasi did stop eating but I let family pressure me and waited to long on him too.

Benny died sometime early this morning

I just wish I knew why. he was only 13, which is young for a black bear.

I'm sorry. It sucks when you lose them young. Especially if you aren't sure why.

I'm so sorry to hear that. :( Lots of hugs your way. I am sure Benny is happy and pain-free now, and is watching you from above. I hope Sybil takes it well...
