Dog got into Bird Vitamins and possibly other things?

Postby Ash » Sat Jul 09, 2011 6:55 pm

Our shih-tzu has a liver shunt and therefore has a very restricted diet. He can only have food made from rice and chicken gluten. Anything else has negative effects on him...

I had bought some bird vitamins the other day to help feed a little bird. I have no idea how, but Zip managed to get the bottle. He bit through it and drank a lot of the solution. He also snuck downstairs yesterday and helped himself to some of Fable's high-protein food.

Last time he got into Fable's food he threw it all up. This time, he's been kind of drowsy-ish. So I'm not super concerned about it, because he did okay last time. We just have to be more careful.

But I AM concerned about him getting the bird vitamins. I have no idea how much he drank compared to how much was originally in the bottle. He has NOT been acting himself at all. He is acting like he is drunk. He is very slow, and he moves weird. He does not wag his tail, and he looks so confused. He also has become super aggressive. I was petting him and he suddenly mounted my arm. I gently tried to get him off, but he would just keep coming back. I moved, but then he followed me and did it again. When I tried to pick him up off of my arm, he started thrashing around, snarling, growling, and biting! He never bites unless it's an accident. He was really trying to attack me. My sister came and pulled him off my arm and moved him into the dining room, putting the gates up at the exits. He is now confined there for now.

It was just so weird. He occasionally gets wound up and aggressive, but this was just over the top. It was seriously like he was insane.

So I was wondering if the bird vitamin solution could have made him drunk? Or could it really have done something to him? I was kind of scared of him--granted, he is a shih-tzu, so I'm really not in much danger, lol, and can kick him across the room if I had to.

What do you think? I just thought it was so out of the blue and weird. It really had to have been the bird vitamins. Is there anything I can do for him? Do you think is was the vitamins? I think he'll be okay if we give him a day or two, but I'm a bit worried for him.

Overdose of vitamins can do all kinds of nasty things to the body depending on which vitamins. Children die from iron poisoning from eating adult vitamins for example. Having a compromised liver will make this worse.

If it's not to late get him to throw up, peroxide works.

If it is too late giving activated charcoal can help absorb any toxins still in the digestive tract.

Even if you can do both those things he will still need a vet.

I would at least put a call into he vet. It is saturday so they probably cant see him but can maybe tell you if it is very conscerning. I would try and call the specialist that saw him too. they would actually be more knowledgeable about it.

I would personally get him to a vet as soon as possible. The fact that he's acting so different from normal is more than enough reason in my opinion, and the fact that you KNOW he ate the vitamins and he already has a compromised liver makes it even more urgent. I don't know about where you live, but around here there are emergency vet clinics that are open on the weekends. If you can get him to one then I would highly suggest doing so.

By the time we realized he had gotten into the vitamins it was much further in the day. We were going to the vet, but some family issues came up unfortunately... Toward the end of the day yesterday he started acting more normal. Today he is acting just perfectly fine.

I wish we could have gotten him to a vet, but we'll still call them and see what they say. Zip is acting completely normal and spunky today. Maybe he didn't get into as much of the vitamins as we thought, or maybe they weren't really a strong, good brand of bird vitamins.

Thanks for the advice though. If there is ever a next time (which I really hope there is not) we'll take him to the vet immediately and hope that family matters don't come up at the same time.

I'm glad he's doing okay now. It really was such a drastic change it took me by surprise. I'll see what the vet says--I don't think there is much they can do now with how much time has elapsed, but it would probably be good to have him see Zip. I'm just glad he's back to himself and isn't having any problems.

It was more likely caused by the protein. Bird vitamins are not very strong and are usually mostly vitamin b, that is pretty safe. The iron is what would be worrying but for a bird I bet the dose in the bottle is pretty low.
