Normal?

Postby BEHRtheRaccoon » Mon Aug 06, 2018 5:57 am

Hey does anyone else's raccoon do a very very soft nibbling like movement on them as they fall asleep almost how he would get milk from mom but hes been weaned for quite some time now. I did ask the vet if it was normal and my current vet is used to wild raccoons so he had no idea. icon_confused.gif I personally love it but want to make sure its okay icon-smile

how old was he was you weaned him?

you could try giving him a bowl of ice cubes with a few mini marshmallow, and very litter syrup.
when He starts to nibble on you. how long has it been since he was weaned and at what age?
nibbling is sure better than biting. icon-smile

I don't recall mine ever doing that.

It's how they would groom each other. It's bonding behavior.

I don't think it would encourage biting. now that I think about it, my one male will lick my arm once in awhile. (he is 2 years old)
the other two don't as often. guess raccoons are like people, they all have different personalities.

some dogs will lick your arm, leg. from what I remember, I thought it was salty to them.

maybe that is their way of thanking us for the good care they get

As TG said above your baby is definitely grooming you. Never discourage this behavior. They only do this with others whom they are totally comfortable with, whether other animals or humans. It'll definitely strengthen the bond you have together.

And you can reciprocate. Try to replicate what he's doing with his teeth with your fingers & nails. Believe me, he'll appreciate it. icon-smile

Yatzee did this. He would take a mouthful of my blanket and do this as he fell asleep. It was so cute!
He would do it with my thumb too.
He doesn't do it anymore. They grow up so fast.

My raccoons are 5 & 7, and they both 'groom' me (and each other) on a regular basis.
