Hi! I live in Michigan and want a raccoon, but Michigan doesn't allow them to be imported. I've been looking for a breeder in Michigan, but sadly no luck :/ Is anyone a breeder or at least know a breeder in Michigan? And if, for whatever reason, there isn't a MI breeder does that mean there is no possible way to get a baby Coon kit?! Someone please have some good news for me!! :(

HELP!! Raccoon Breeders In Michigan

Re: HELP!! Raccoon Breeders In Michigan
gee, sorry, I don't know of any.
can you call a zoo or fur farm in your state and ask them if they know of any?
maybe some of the members here might know if there are some from MI.

Yeah its been rough trying to find one. I have thought about checking into the fur farm stuff. There's a girl on here who got her Coon from a fur farm. I can try calling a zoo as well. All of my previous Coon babies were rescue/rehabilitated wild babies, so we only "kept" them til they left on their own (we didn't cage them once they were weaned and eating freely, so they were free to come and go as they pleased).
Re: HELP!! Raccoon Breeders In Michigan
I am sure you already know this, but, make sure you get one on the bottle.
much easier to work with. unfortately, some fur farms sell ones that are weaned.
but, as you know, they really needs lots of quaility time mostly when young.
however, I bought my blonde raccoon that was already weaned.
(one of those spur of the moment things)
he is not agressive, never has been. but, he is shy.
he is coming around rather well. but, not like my oldest one (larry).
partly could be my fault for having too many critters
and didn't spend as much time with him as I should have.
guess, some coons could have different personalities too.
if I can think of any other ideas, I will let you know.
maybe the MI people will chime in with ideas.

Lol well thank you for your help. And yes, I was hoping someone from MI would see the post and have some good news for me :P As of right now I do have a list of farms and I guess I'll just have to start calling around to see who has coons. Do most usually have them?

Re: HELP!! Raccoon Breeders In Michigan
Fur farms that breed raccoons are kind of uncommon. I don't think their furs are worth very much in comparison to a fox or mink pelt. Also, it is illegal for a fur farm to sell you one - federal law requires anyone selling a native or exotic animal to have a USDA license.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any breeders in Michigan. Maybe you can find a way around the importation law, maybe get some sort of exemption for it if you do some legal fighting.
Trefoil is in Michigan I think and she has had multiple coons, and currently has one. So that would mean there is some way to get one.

You might ask these people, I believe they are in Michigan and if they don't have coons they might know of someone who does. www.cjgexotics.com
