Red Fox Breeding Pen Size

Postby Wiggles » Mon Jun 22, 2015 10:30 pm

What size footprint would you recommend for a red fox breeding pen?

I was thinking of going with a 10' x 20' using the minimum footprint of 10' x 10' for a single adult fox as my reference point. However, I've also heard that a 20' x 20' footprint is necessary while others have said 10' x 10' is sufficient.

Thanks in advance!

I already have plans to integrate partially underground dens into the pens in order to provide them with a temperature-stable place to sleep.

Oh, and here's my little male marble; his name is Chandler. He's from a calico white mark x marble hence the little bit of red on his face.

Hi, sorry no one answered you. I've been offline for a while.

A 10X20' pen would be a good size for two vulpes vulpes. So would make a good breeder enclosure as well. Generally 10X10' is the minimum suggested for 1 pet fox--so doubling it up is good. They can breed in smaller, but I think that's a good size. Obviously the bigger the better, but should be fine. :)

Chandler is cute! I love sunglows. :)

The only thing I would suggest is make sure you have enough experience prior to breeding foxes. A couple years experience owning foxes and reading up on breeding and getting USDA licensed is what I recommend. I own my two, but the male is neutered. So I've been taking it slow, lol (slower than I'd like, but I'm really glad I didn't jump right into breeding my second year of owning a fox like most people do; I think it's best to wait).

Thanks for the advice!

I kinda of wondered if he was a sunglow because of the red on him, but I wasn't too sure.

If he has red, it means he either is a cross marble or a red marble, aka sunglow. A regular marble (aka, silver marble, arctic marble) would be a black fox with the white marbling on its body. So if there's ever any red, even if it's just a little, it'll be a sunglow. :)
