Breeding Fennec Fox!!!!!!!

Postby Tikestike » Sun Oct 11, 2015 4:33 pm

Hi all! Questions for fennec breeders....

What are your breeding setups like?!?!? It is so hard to find any pictures of how they should be setup online... Do you house the breeders indoors, or outdoors? What kind of enclosures and how big? Ferret cages???? I've had my fennec now for years and have been researching as much as possible on breeding but it is pretty hard finding information, especially housing the breeders!!!!! Any information/advice/tips helps!! :)
Thanks

They need a large area, like their own room or convert part of a heated basement into an enclosure. They need multiple nest boxes so they can move the kits if they feel threatened so they are less likely to kill and eat them. Having them in anything like a ferret cage will pretty much guarantee they kill the kits. Having them in the home with family members walking by will stress them and likely end in infant death, it does not matter if they were used to this before the kits. Sometimes they will still eat them for no apparent reason. A camera set up on the cage long as they are used to it before the kits are born can help. If she starts moving the kits around a lot it is time to pull them. But they need lots of quiet, lots of space and lots of multiple nest boxes, and lots of quiet. Don't add or change anything during kit time and give them lots of space. Sometimes they'll still eat them even with everything done right.

Breeding animals is so exciting and so amazing! It takes a ton of work and planning, so prepare to be very committed.
First, make sure you have a compatible, healthy, unrelated pair of fennecs that have a good, tame, calm personality and no deformities or known health issues. Make sure they have a healthy diet and are of proper breeding age.
The enclosure should be large, at least room sized, and devoted to the foxes. It should include multiple hiding places, a water dish, toys, and places to climb, jump, hide and best of all an outdoor pen with sand or soil in it for digging and sunlight. It can be connected to the indoors through a dog (fox) door or a window with a ramp.
Make sure it is warm and they are not disturbed too much. The tamer they are the less likely they are to be stressed by handling of their kits.
The more exercise and better enclosure the less stress and the more likely you will be to have tame, healthy, friendly kits.
If health problems should crop up that appear genetic at all, then the pair should be neutered/spayed and retired together.

I hope this helps. Best of luck!! : )

Oh yeah. Fennec babies are some of the most difficult to bottle feed. They are very prone to aspirating even if you have experience with other species bottle feeding they will be very tough. If you don't have experience bottle feeding other species first you need to.
