red fox colors maths

Postby naja-naja » Fri Apr 22, 2016 9:36 am

just did the maths on red fox colors. and wow.
only going on the color mutations i'm aware of, that's marble, platinum, white face, fire, (and the super forms, not counting the lethal supers) and pearl and burgundy, I've calculated 76 different combinations. when you times this by the 3 'wild type' or base colors of red, silver and cross (i didn't count all the types of silver as seperate nor did i count gold or gold cross as seperate from red even though there may be slight differences) you end up with 228 different color forms!

for anyone interested here's the list.

Are there any other color forms available apart from these? The next stage of the project will be to collect additional genes, work them into the table, then get pictures and trade names of the combinations.

Wow, awesome job with the list. I've been writing down all the red fox colors and their genetics, so this will certainly help. All the variety is AMAZING. : )

Yeah, so many different possibilities. There's champagne too, but I don't really understand it all that well.
I'm Fable and Ifrit's mommy. Also mommy to Carousel, Breeze, and a bunch of snakes, lizards, and spiders. Oh, and one amphibian!

I always found genetics very interesting I'm a big nerd ok! So it nice to see someone put work into the numbers of mutations, to see possibilities of color variations.

Some old "fur farmer's" books have some great information on fox and mink genetics. They are kind of hard to find since they are a little older, but more detailed than most modern information. Even have health problems that are linked to certain strains and information such as that.

No, you just need to go right to the publisher for a copy. ... r_40_2.pdf

That PDF tells you who to contact about their books.

I ordered my pair in December 2016. I imagine they'll still have them in-stock. I have a feeling they kept it in-print, but just limited the places you can order them (they make more money that way by cutting the middle-man out)
