age to spay neuter?

Postby naja-naja » Wed May 27, 2015 12:33 pm

Hi, I've seen recommendations to spay/neuter by 6 months of age or by 4 months of age, but what is the youngest age one should consider spaying or neutering a fox? (if the answer is different ages for different species please specify) i'm assuming it has to do with the size of the animal and general anesthetic so red foxes can get it done younger then fennecs for example.

For red foxes, I've seen people spay/neuter at young as 6 weeks or once they reach a certain age threshold. It's controversial among vets for not only foxes but dogs and cats - it's starting to be seen as an 'old fashioned' thing to wait until the animal is 3-6 months old. It all depends on when your vet feels comfortable doing it, really.

Not to my knowledge, actually. The risk would be with the anesthesia since they are small, but that's why you need a good vet.

I actually thought you said 6 weeks. goes to show how much attention I pay sometimes.
when I replied, I was referring to 6 weeks.
