Monotremes

Postby KKM » Thu Aug 04, 2016 1:24 am

I have always been fascinated with this order of mammals, as they are so vastly different from other species. In fact, when I was around ten, my birthday gift was a close encounter with a short-beaked echidna at the zoo. I remember seeing an ad a few years back for that very species from Ken's Exotics, but I don't know if they were captive bred or imported. Isn't there a ban on all Australian imports? Is there anyone still importing/breeding monotremes? I have never seen platypuses or long-beaked echidnas outside of Australia so I assume the only species I'd ever be able to get ahold of is the short-beaked echidna.

No they can't be imported/exported from Australia. Those were zoo surplus.

I've seen them pop up here and there for sale. But as said, they aren't imports.
