Arctic Fox - Biting his tail

Postby marcitect1960 » Thu Sep 01, 2016 9:44 am

Help! We have an arctic fox, Ghost, that is about 3 1/2 months old. About a month ago, he began to bite his tail (all over, but primarily the tip) that results in the last 2" of his tail being amputated. He has been to the vet (a couple of vets) and no one seems to have a clue as to what is going on. After the amputation, he was better for a couple of weeks, but it recently started again. He screams all night and we are worried he is in pain, though we continue to apply an anesthetic spray that the vets provided. Any direction or information would be GREATLY appreciated.

Worried in Tennessee.

It could be your fox is allergic to something that's in his diet. That's the major reason I can think of, but I will link you a very informative site that relates to your current problem.

What is his caging, diet and enrichment like? Sometimes they get a bit of "zoochosis" to use an AR coined term. This can cause them to self mutilate. Tons of variety of enrichment. Be sure there is ample taurine in the diet as one of it's functions is to help keep them calmer. A friend may help since Arctics share dens in the wild so are kind of communal.
